Position Summary:
Job Summary: The Resident Assistant (RA) is a student staff member tasked with overseeing and responding to the needs and concerns of the residents in the complex to which they are assigned. The RAs responsibilities are to develop a safe, healthy, and inclusive community amongst the residents of their assigned areas. This is achieved through policy enforcement, facilities management, programming, and assisting with Student Life initiatives. This position includes, at the start of the academic year, a private room (pending no emergency need), and partial meal plan for subsequent years of employment. This position is defined as a non-exempt position under FLSA regulations. This position directly reports to the Area Coordinator (AC). Position Responsibilities:· Attending the entirety of fall and spring RA Trainings.· Student Staff members will participate in events sponsored by the Residence Life Office including, but not limited to, office programming, orientation, housing selection, and senior week and commencement activities.· Maintain a visible presence within their community and develop professional relationships with all residents assigned to their area.· Post information and fliers received from the Residence Life Office in a timely fashion.· Student Staff members will attend all meetings, including but not limited to, weekly staff meetings, one-on-ones, in-services, all staff meetings, area meetings.· Serve in an on-call rotation as scheduled and outlined by departmental/complex guidelines.· Address, document, and refer potential policy violations following outlined procedures. · Contribute to the resident educational experience through the creation of educational bulletin boards and sharing of campus resources.· Respond to resident concerns in an appropriate and timely manner and refer to additional campus resources as necessary.· Communicate all concerns to your Area Coordinator (AC) and follow up as directed.· Work cooperatively as a member of a complex staff to enhance the resident and community experience.· Maintain confidentiality and respect for all students when responding to sensitive issues.·Attend and contribute to all assigned job functions including, but not limited to, staff meetings, trainings, one-on-ones with AC, and staff in-services. · Maintain professionalism when interacting with all members of the SU and local communities.· Programming requirements must be completed as directed by the Residence Life Office in accordance with the Residence Life Office’s Student Engagement Plan.· E-mails must be checked each day and timely communication is pertinent. · Room condition reports (RCRs), work orders, roommate agreements, conflict resolution meetings, health and wellness check, key audits, break information and any other administrative task given by the Residence Life Office is to be completed in full and by the communicated deadline.· Bulletin Boards must be completed as directed by the Residence Life Office in accordance with the Residence Life Office’s Student Engagement Plan.· Student Staff members are expected to maintain a consistent presence in their area and form meaningful relationships with residents and staff.· Student Staff members are expected to support, enforce, and abide by all federal and state laws, as well as all University policies and procedures.· If the student staff member believes they have committed a violation of the Student Handbook, the Student Staff member must notify their professional staff member and their Lead Resident Assistant (LRA) within 24 hours. A Student Staff member may be placed on administrative leave until their process has concluded.· The Student Staff member’s job performance will be evaluated once a year prior to re-hire season. Student Staff members are expected to complete all duties and responsibilities as described in this description and staff manual.· Student Staff members shall not discriminate against any person on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability status, genetic information, veterans’ status, ethnic origin, ancestry, social class, marital and parental status, geography, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other basis protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws.· Student Staff members report all emergencies and all incidents to the Campus Life Professional On-Call staff member at the time of the incident via phone or email. Immediately following the incident or by 9am the following morning, an incident report must be submitted to Maxient.· Behavior that is not civil or appropriate in a community is expected to be addressed and reported through Maxient.· Perform other duties as assigned by the Residence Life Office. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities· Student Staff members are both leaders and role models for other students. Therefore, they are expected to act in a consistent, professional manner and to refrain from inappropriate or offensive communication or behavior on campus, in the community, and all social media venues. · Student Staff members must exercise ethical decision-making and maintain open and honest communication with their supervisors.· Student Staff members are expected to maintain confidentiality and privacy. Privacy pertains to all residents, staff members, and official documents. To maintain privacy, any and all concerns should be taken to the direct supervisor.· Student Staff members also recognize the fact that they must act in a respectful manner towards all residents, university personnel, and university guests.· Have direct interactions with each of their residents, ensuring the knowledge of names and rooms by mid-term each semester.
Conditions of Employment: The RA position requires a large time commitment and responsibility, which necessitates that staff members meet/maintain the following conditions of employment:· RAs must maintain a cumulative and semester(s) GPA no lower than 2.5.o RAs are expected to place academics before the RA position, with all other on and off campus responsibilities coming after the RA position.· RAs may not have a severe conduct history, no open sanctions, and must be in good standing with the university.· RAs may not hold off-campus employment totaling more than 10 hours per week, unless approved by your AC.· RAs must attend all in-person departmental training throughout their employment.· RAs must assist with all openings and closings of all residence halls and will be expected to stay late and return to campus early during breaks and semesters. · RAs are required to have a meal plan no matter where their placement is. Dates of Employment:· RAs will hold the position for the entirety of the 2024-2025 academic year. Exceptions (or considerations) are made for those graduating in December or approved to travel on GO programs.· The estimated dates of employment for the 2024-2025 academic year are as follows:o Fall 2024 employment is August 2024-December 2024.§ Fall 2024 training is anticipated to begin August 10, 2024.· Attending training is a condition of employment and it is the expectation that personal/additional professional plans are made around these dates. § Fall 2024 closing is anticipated to end December 16, 2024.o Spring 2025 employment is January 2025-May 2025.§ Spring 2025 training is anticipated to begin January 12, 2025.§ Spring 2025 closing is anticipated to end May 20, 2025.· Attending training is a condition of employment and it is the expectation that personal/additional professional plans are made around these dates. Compensation· Room Credit: One full room credit in their assigned areas.o For references, 2023-2024 Total Room Credit: $8,850o RAs placed in suites/apartments may have the opportunity to fill the other rooms in their suite/apartment.· Board Credit: Returning RAs (RAs returning to the position for a 2nd or 3rd year) will receive additional compensation in the form of a partial meal plan credit (detailed below). All RAs are required to have a meal plan even if they live in an area of campus that does not require it. o The exact amount of the Board Credit is determined by the meal plan that is selected by the RA. For reference, below are the rates based on 2023-2024 The Platinum Plan which totaled $6,850.00 per year. o 2nd year RAs will have ¼ of their meal plan covered for the year.§ For Example Only: Based on the 2023-2024 Platinum Plan Board Credit would be $1,712.50.o 3rd year RAs will have ½ of their meal plan covered for the year.§ For Example Only: Based on the 2023-2024 Platinum Plan Board Credit would be $3,425.00.· Compensation cannot be used to cover any other costs such as tuition, fees, books, etc.
Required Qualifications:
Experience· No experience required. Location· On campus at Susquehanna University.· If offered a position, Student Staff members are required to live in the room that they are offered in their outcome letters. Additional Requirements· Student Staff members are required to get prior approval from their supervisor for secondary jobs, internships, placements, leadership positions, and practicums. These types of activities, if approved, may not total more than 10 hours per week.· Student Staff members hold leadership positions on campus that designate them as responsible employees under Title IX, a federal law intended to end sex discrimination in education. Responsible employee is a designation that asks Student Staff members to protect against sexual misconduct and gender-based violence on campus. Student Staff members as responsible employees must report any instances of sexual misconduct or gender-based violence to the Title IX Coordinator, by completing the online report form found on both the university Title IX website as well as the Title IX mySU page. If any instance of sexual misconduct or gender-based violence is experienced by an Student Staff members, they should report their experience to the Title IX Coordinator without fear of employment retaliation. Student Staff members are also protected under the Title IX policy and, as stated in the ‘limited amnesty’ section of the Susquehanna University Student Handbook, will not be subject to disciplinary action for personal consumption of alcohol or drugs related to the incident.
