Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies is an interdisciplinary, undergraduate unit of Western Washington University, dedicated to
assisting students in taking an unusual degree of responsibility for the structure and content of their education specifically in the areas
of creative art, social theory, law, audio engineering, and science. Students are not evaluated on an A-F scale, but rather narrative self-
and faculty-evaluations of their performance in detail for each course.
Fairhaven College supports Western’s mission, which states
that together with our students, staff, and faculty, we are committed to making a positive impact in the state and the world with a shared
focus on academic excellence and inclusive achievement. We encourage applications from women, people of color, people with disabilities,
veterans, and other candidates from underrepresented backgrounds and with diverse experiences interested in this opportunity.
Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies at Western Washington University anticipates multiple openings for Visiting Assistant
Professor positions for the 2024-2025 academic year. We welcome applicants who bring together perspectives from multiple disciplines in the
following areas:
Successful candidates will teach full-time for one year in Fairhaven College’s seminar-style curriculum that
features small class sizes, narrative evaluations, and a dynamic, collaborative academic culture in a small college (400 students) embedded
within a comprehensive public liberal arts university. Visiting Assistant Professors will teach two 5-credit courses per quarter (30
credits) and have a 6-credit advising services contract. Advising duties include advising students on degree paths, sponsoring Independent
Study Projects (ISPs) and Senior Projects, participating in students’ Transition meetings, and serving on students’
Interdisciplinary Studies Concentration committees.
Fairhaven College is individualized and student-centered. Instruction at Western
Washington University is overwhelmingly face-to-face and we cannot accommodate applicants wishing to teach remotely. All candidates,
especially in clinical social work or psychology, are asked to refer any students needing therapeutic services to the Counselling Center,
and not to engage in counselling their students.
