This position is responsible for the 24 hour leadership, management, and support of assigned Surgical Services’ areas. This role is accountable for demonstrating collaborative partnership with other Surgical Services’ Directors and Managers to ensure the highest quality of surgical, procedural, and perianesthesia services. The Director oversees clinical operations, standardized practices, patient throughput, bed capacity, operational efficiencies, and safety. Priority work functions are rendered to support organizational recruitment and retention initiatives.
This position translates strategic planning, mission, policies, and procedures into effective actions to ensure quality perianesthesia, operative, and procedural patient care. The Director manages the human and material resources of assigned areas to achieve quality patient care outcomes and cost effective care. The Director is responsible for the conservation of financial resources and the provision of perioperative nursing clinical expertise The Director partners with senior administration to support projects across the health system. Additionally, the Director facilitates the development of clinical staff functioning within nationally endorsed scopes of practice and innovative, high-tech clinical programs. The Director provides leadership and direction to assigned departmental leaders. The Director assumes responsibility for provision of evidence-based practice, adherence to professional national standards, and regulatory compliance. The Director plays an active role executing/managing patient/family WOW experiences, customer satisfaction, performance initiatives, provider engagement, and risk management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. Current license to practice Registered Professional Nursing in West Virginia.
2. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
EXPERIENCE:
1. Five (5) years nursing experiencewithat least two years in a management or administrative position.
PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. Master’s degree in related field, Masters of Science in Nursing.
2. Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certifications preferred.
3. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) preferred.
4. Specialty certification preferred
EXPERIENCE:
1. Hospital setting experience caring for elective, urgent, and emergent perioperative patients

1. Collaboratively develops, implements, and promotes divisional strategies for the delivery of quality patient care and supporting services in assigned areas showcasing evidence-based practice and adherence to professional national standards. Manages positive patient experience, provider engagement, change, and organizational resources. Oversees clinical operations, standardized practices, patient throughput, bed capacity, operational efficiencies, and safety.
2. Responsible for Surgical Services’ service integration partnering with other WVU Medicine facilities as needed. May include program expansion support, design/opening of new service sites, and standardization of system contracts/supplies. Shares expertise with other system hospital leaders to foster collegial working relationships.
3. Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates the delivery of professional nursing and technologist patient care by empowering staff, actualizing shared decision making, supporting interdepartmental initiatives, and promoting customer satisfaction. Accountable and responsible for demonstrating collaborative partnership with other Surgical Services’ Directors and Managers.
4. Selects, hires, manages, and evaluates the performance and effectiveness of employees. Facilitates the professional development of clinical practice competencies within assigned areas. Responsible for the oversight of all departmental Human Resources’ functions including staff recruitment and retention.
5. Responsible for the administrative operations of assigned areas. Includes service volume/revenue projections, expense monitoring, productivity analysis, capital equipment planning, and payroll approval. Monthly generates departmental budgetary variance justifications. May partner with Planning and Design to operationalize a construction project.
6. Analyzes trends to develop both short and long range action plans for budget needs including competitive staffing incentive programs and emerging technology. Conducts stay interviews.
7. Establishes annual departmental quality, service, and financial PI goals using organizational annual strategic plan/cascading goals. Quarterly monitors PI goal achievement.
8. Ensures assigned areas are in compliance with applicable regulations and safety standards.
9. Promotes departmental recognition endeavors. Conducts peer review and performance reviews that provide objective, constructive feedback regarding strengths and opportunities for improvement, including developmental plans for employees.
10. Collaborates with medical staff, ancillary/support directors and other personnel in resolving issues and promoting optimal patient care. Devises a communication system to keep all personnel informed about the hospital and assigned areas. Has a mechanism in place to provide interaction with all employees on all shifts.
11. Enforces hospital and Surgical Services’ policies. Ensures that staff are meeting the established standards of behavior. Generates divisional policies or policy revisions as needed. Performs gap analyses as needed.
12. Supports education, training, and resource development of assigned staff. Includes the role of developing a competent staff through the provision of orientation, in-services, continuing education programs, and competency validation programs.
13. Assumes responsibility for the patient focused performance improvement process engaging staff participation in multidisciplinary activities conducted for the purpose of improving the quality and reducing the cost of care. Develops and monitors appropriate operational performance measures. Reviews outcomes and improves operational system to ensure continued improvement. Performs public reporting, as applicable.
14. Participates in professional activities and organizations. Produces and shares scholarly work to communicate professional nursing and technical practice innovation. Represents Surgical Services within the hospital, health system, and community through presentation and education activities.
15. Ensures the appropriate delegation of departmental activities considering scope of practice of employee roles. Supervises delegated activities to assure effective completion. Represents Surgical Services in high level decision-making as needed (i.e. prioritization of services to meet emerging patient surge needs).
16. Participates in Leadership Forum, Council of Surgical Chairs’ and OR Leadership meetings. Provides Medical Director and Clinical Administrator with block utilization and practice enhancement recommendations.
17. Utilizes data analytical reporting to trend divisional efficiency metrics, patient safety, quality, and service utilizations to provide a foundation for patient care delivery and staffing models.
18. Collaborates with Senior Administration, Incident Command Center, Medical Staff, Bed Tower, House Supervisors, House Nursing and Ancillary Support Directors/Designees to resolve issues. Implements strategies to expand patient referrals. Monitors customer satisfaction and initiates service recovery.
19. Chairs and participates in committees. Completes additional projects as assigned including oversight of construction in assigned departmental areas. Other duties as assigned including coverage of leadership call.
20. Supports the education of students in nursing, medicine, and allied health professions. Supports and participates in ongoing research projects. Monitors vendor activities in assigned areas.
