Job Description
Summary
The Research Specialist C will oversee and perform experiments to advance the study of adverse obstetrical outcomes
including preterm birth. The individual will be responsible for planning, managing, and performing in vitro studies in the laboratory
requiring the design, creation, and utilization of complex human/microbe and metabolomic co-culture models. In addition to designing and
independently executing experiments to meet the needs of each study, the candidate will be required to maintain multiple immortalized and
primary
cell lines. Thus, an outstanding proficiency in in vitro cellular techniques such as sterile cell culture and complex functional
assays is required. The candidate will supervise, assist, and train other lab members whose projects require in vitro studies. In addition
to cell-based assays, the incumbent must have significant expertise with down-stream molecular assays including DNA, RNA and protein-based
techniques. The candidate will also contribute to laboratory manager duties. The individual will perform laboratory maintenance, ordering,
and have scientific oversight of laboratory members and projects (including undergraduates and graduate students). The candidate will also
serve as the laboratory safety coordinator. This individual will communicate with Penn core facilities and bioinformaticians who will
support data analytics. The candidate will help with the development of novel 3D model systems, including cervical organoids. The individual
will participate in abstract preparation for national and international conferences. The individual will also help with manuscript and grant
preparation. The candidate must also exhibit excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. The ability to present data clearly is
essential. The incumbent should be able to independently complete, troubleshoot and analyze experiments in accordance with project
deadlines. They should be proficient in using computer-based systems including, and not limited to, excel, word, Graph pad and other
databases. The ability to work independently and with others is necessary.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry,
or closely related field and 3-5 years experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Experience in cell
culture and proficiency in experimental design required. Experience in flow cytometry, protein assays, PCR, RNA/DNA analyses is preferred
but not required.
