The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School is looking for a highly motivated and creative Bioinformatician. We encourage applications from candidates with a PhD and/or MD degree that have a demonstrated record of exceptional research contributions in understanding the underlying mechanisms that drive human immune response specifically in diseases associated with acute inflammation such as, but not limited to sepsis, asthma, ARDS, etc. The Bioinformatician is expected to participate in research activities involved in the analysis, interpretation, and integration with other `omics and electronic health record data of Next Generation Sequencing such as data derived from genomics and transcriptomics (bulk and single-cell sequencing).

Patient Care: Every year, we treat more than 210,000 patients in our University Hospital, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Hurley Medical Center, and Ann Arbor VA Emergency Departments. We are the first institution nationally to host the Emergency Critical Care Center, (EC3) an integral part of patient care, education and research. Education: We conduct our four-year emergency medicine residency in partnership with St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor and Hurley Medical Center, Flint. We emphasize clinical excellence and premier preparation for careers in academic medicine. Our pediatric emergency medicine division and fellowship is based in the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Emergency Medicine is a required clinical clerkship at the University of Michigan Medical School.
Research: The U-M Department of Emergency Medicine is currently ranked #2 in National Institutes of Health funding and continues to receive significant funding from other federal agencies, foundations, industry, and philanthropy. We have a robust infrastructure to support a wide variety of research endeavors including basic sciences (small and large animal research facilities), genomics, metabolomics, clinical trials health services research, big data analytics, and education. Notable research programs include: The U-M Injury Prevention Center, the Max Harry Weil Institute for Critical Care Research and Innovation, the Strategies to Innovate Emergency Care Clinical Trials Network (SIREN) Clinical Coordinating Center, Michigan Emergency Department Improvement Collaborative (MEDIC), Acute Care Research Unit (ACRU), Michigan Resuscitation Innovation and Science Enterprise (M-RISE), NIH StrokeNet, Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung Injury (PETAL) Network, Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) and the newly formed first global emergency research and education network; Emergency Medicine Education and Research by Global Experts (EMERGE network).
Responsibilities*
Applicants to this position will:
1. Perform data management, quality control, data processing, data analysis and other bioinformatics related tasks on high-dimensional data in coordination with study investigators.
2. Participate in research activities involved in the analysis of Next Generation sequencing data such as data derived from genomics and transcriptomics (including single cell) studies.
3. Evaluate, design, and build informatic tools such as databases, analytical tools, and service resources.
4. Support research services such as study design, data management, data migration and data analysis.
5. Stay abreast of recent literature and other new developments, incorporating into existing data analysis protocols and pipelines in support of the department’s mission of high quality, reproducible statistical research.

The candidate should be able to work as part of a team, knowledge of molecular biology, be detail-oriented, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. The Scientist will contribute ideas to automate and improve existing analysis methods, assist in preparing and submitting manuscripts for publication and assist with establishing and documenting protocols or best practices for common research tasks. Candidates with a strong background in bioinformatics, genomics, especially human host transcriptomics are encouraged to apply. Candidates who have participated in federal grants either as co-investigators or principal investigators will be given a preference.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
