Course / Program Description
A key component of the teacher induction program is its job-embedded system of mentoring support and professional learning. The UCLA Extension mentor that is assigned to each participating teacher is responsible for coordinating with the teacher, school site administrators, and program instructors to support the teacher’s planning and implementation of an individual learning plan and to provide coaching and ongoing support for improving instructional practices. Participating teachers receive an average of at least one hour per week of individualized support throughout each academic year during which they are enrolled in the induction program, and they maintain documentation of all support activities. Participating teachers who have been assigned a UCLA Extension mentor must be enrolled concurrently in this course while completing the other induction program coursework.
The hiring department is hiring mentors for all subject areas (Multiple Subject, Education Specialist, Art, Social Science, English, Mathematics, Physical Education, Biological Science, etc).
Mentors receive one UCLA Extension continuing education unit per year.
Job Description
Mentors are assigned to a candidate at the beginning of the PK-12 school semester and within 30 days of program enrollment. The Mentor will work with the same candidate for the full two academic years of program enrollment. Mentors provide an average of not less than one hour per week of individualized support and mentoring to their candidate.

In Induction A, B, and C, teacher candidates develop their own inquiry question to examine an aspect of their teaching practice that they want to improve, related to their ILP and to the course’s essential question. Working closely with their mentor, they use a plan-tech-reflect-apply approach to implement an action plan for that inquiry question. In the Induction (D), candidates demonstrate their development as a professional educator by designing and delivering a learning module to share professional knowledge on a selected topic with others in that candidate’s professional learning community.
Instructor Duties:
New and veteran mentors participate in the Mentor Collaboration course each term. Content is differentiated to meet each mentor’s coaching needs.
