Position Summary

At the Long Island State Veterans Home (LISVH), the Clinical Nurse Manager is a valuable member of our nursing team who assumes the managerial and clinical responsibility for the delivery of nursing care to the residents on their assigned units on a 24 hour basis. The clinical nurse manager will facilitate and coordinate a comprehensive nursing assessment and the development, implementation and evaluation of the interdisciplinary care plan. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior communication and organization skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence through the LISVH mission, values and code of conduct. The clinical nurse manager will assume supervisory responsibilities of the LISVH on rotating weekends and off shift as needed.

Duties of a Nurse Manager may include the following but are not limited to:

• Collaborates with other Clinical Nurse Managers and Nursing Administration in the development of the standards of nursing practice and resident care protocols for effective operations of the nursing department.
• Determines the nursing care needs of the resident by identifying and providing appropriate numbers and skill level of staff, adequate and appropriate supplies, adequate and functional equipment as well as a safe and clean environment.
• Ensures that all direct and non-direct care staff assigned to the nursing unit(s) understands, protects, and promotes the rights of each resident, the quality of life and the maximum independence of each resident.
• Accessible to residents, families and visitors to listen and respond to concerns and inquires in a positive and timely manner and ensures that resident/resident representative participates in the planning and care of the resident.
• Responsible for the coordination and management of the nursing care of the residents on his/her assigned unit(s).
• Collaborates and/or assists the In-Service Education Coordinator with orientation and ongoing competencies for their staff members on their units. Acts as a role model and a preceptor within his/her role for staff and student nurses.
• Complete annual performance evaluations of all staff on their units.
• In Collaboration with Human Resources will participate in counseling and/disciplinary action as needed.
• Responsible for effective communications between nursing and other departments and professionals, and ensures that communication between nursing units and shifts is comprehensive and timely.
• Participates in the analysis of data relevant to the quality of resident care.
• Participates in the Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Program. Directs staff in performance improvement activities that improve outcomes, satisfaction and enhances organizational efficiency.
• Assumes administrative /supervisory responsibilities for the Nursing Department on holidays/weekends, off shift and as needed.
• Participates in the development and management of the nursing budget.
• Ensures the units are in compliance with all Federal and State regulates and participates in annual Department of Health and Veterans Administration Surveys.
• Collaborates with the MDS staff to ensure completion of notes and assessments in a timely manner.

Master’s Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration or related field, Long Term Care, Geriatric or related experience

Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.

Essential Position: This position has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. This means that when the Long Island State Veterans Home is faced with an emergency, employees in such positions are required to remain at their work location or to report to work.

The LISVH is a 24/7 skilled nursing facility. As such, all positions are subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary to meet the operating needs of the facility.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements: Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from the Long Island State Veterans Home Employee Health Department, clear a background investigation, submit three (3) written references, and provide a copy of the required license(s)/certificate(s).
