Position Description
The ideal candidate is a transformational leader who provides for the safety of all individuals on the University campus including events and functions. The Chief of Police will possess strong communication skills to create and sustain effective partnerships with the students, staff, faculty, and guests of the University in an effort to promote community well-being. The preferred candidate will inspire confidence internally and externally, set and communicate clear objectives, and embrace personal, departmental, and organizational accountability.
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Administration (VCA), The Chief of Police will work with appointed Chancellor, James T. Minor, PhD., and senior University administration to enhance an ethical organizational culture through a commitment to fairness and equity in all their responsibilities. The Chief of Police will direct daily police operations, determine operational goals, conduct fiscal and budget planning, emergency and disaster planning, special events safety planning, and general campus safety plans. This position is tasked with making contributions to a seamless leadership team in the ongoing development of long and short-term goals and objectives that align and support the University’s mission.

The Chief works collaboratively with many constituencies within the University to accomplish mutual goals. The SIUE Police Department (SIUE PD) is comprised of 42 sworn police officers and eight civilian employees. SIUE PD officers are certified law enforcement officers with full investigatory and arrest authority granted by Illinois law.
Utilizing contemporary and innovative methods of community policing, the SIUE PD provides routine, preventative patrol (vehicle, foot, and bicycle) services and enforces both the criminal and traffic statutes of the State of Illinois for the Edwardsville campus, and the East St. Louis, IL and Alton, IL locations. As part of our Culture of Excellence, The Chief of Police will direct a diverse team of law enforcement officers. The successful candidate will serve as a coach and mentor to increase the department’s capacity to effectively manage conflict and establish a system of continuous improvement.
Administrative duties include oversight of compliance and the development, revision, implementation and enforcement of law, operating policies and procedures for local state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Oversight coordination of interagency law enforcement efforts related to the University. The selected candidate will take a lead role in the University’s response to crisis/emergency management representing the SIUE PD on various committees. Lead and direct daily police operations; and perform other duties as assigned.
