The individual will provide medical care to patients with breast cancer in the inpatient and outpatient setting which includes participation in the breast cancer multidisciplinary conference. The individual will deliver care and supervise residents and fellows on the inpatient and consultative hematology/oncology services including weekend call. This position involves 50% clinical effort. Scholarly activity: This position affords 50% protected time for scholarly activity. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct an independent cancer research program which is either laboratory-based or focused on clinical investigations. Membership in the University of Vermont Cancer Center is expected. A history of productive cancer-focused research, with extramural support for research activities, is expected. UVM is a member of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology and individuals will participate in national cooperative group activities. Teaching: The candidate will teach Hematology/Oncology fellows, medical residents, graduate students (if appropriate) and medical students through didactic lectures, clinics, ward rounds, laboratory settings and consultation rounds. Opportunities exist for developing and teaching portions of courses in medicine for graduate and medical students. Instructional duties may require teaching outside of the area of the candidate’s specialty when on inpatient and consult medicine services. Service and Leadership Opportunity: This position has the opportunity for a leadership role in the University of Vermont Cancer Center. Senior applicants who have at least 2 years of experience at the Associate Professor level, or are currently Professor, may serve as Associate Director for Clinical & Translational Research. Applicants earlier in their careers may serve as Assistant Director for Clinical & Translational Research with mentoring to progress to a senior leadership role in the future. As Associate Director, the successful candidate will have oversight and coordination responsibilities for clinical & translational research within the Center. As Assistant Director, the successful candidate will also have oversight responsibilities, will work collaboratively with other senior leaders of the Cancer Center, and will be afforded opportunities to expand the clinical and translational research portfolio by promoting transdisciplinary collaborations and developing new initiatives such as an early phase clinical trials program. The successful candidate will also participate in appropriate Department of Medicine, Larner College of Medicine and University of Vermont Cancer Center committees and functions, and serve in an academic advisory capacity to medical students, medical residents and Hematology/Oncology fellows. Support: Start-up support will be available, with the nature and amount dependent on the individual candidates’ needs. Exceptional laboratory space is available through the University of Vermont Cancer Center for physician-scientists conducting a laboratory-based research program. Qualifications: M.D. degree or equivalent. Applicants must be ABIM board certified in Medical Oncology. Applicants must be clinically qualified to care for patients in the broad discipline of oncology and hematology and provide coverage for patients over nights and weekends as needed. Applicants must be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Vermont, for hospital privileges at UVM Medical Center, and academic appointment at UVM. Candidates should have documented successful experience in an academic position and meet eligibility criteria for appointment at the Associate or Full Professor rank. Candidates must possess the experience and skills to provide outstanding clinical care, advance the scholarly mission of the University and meet University criteria for retention and promotion.
