Description
The Program in Public Health at Stony Brook invites applications for the Director position of the Master’s in Health Administration (MHA). The Program in Public Health holds accreditation by both the Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) for the MHA and the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) for the MPH. The MHA is currently offered online and asynchronously. The successful candidate will join the core faculty of the Program in Public Health in a tenure-track or tenure role at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The candidate will assume the Director position on or about July 1, 2024 and become responsible for directing all aspects of the MHA Program (50% of their time will be devoted to directing the program), reporting directly to the Executive Director of the Program in Public Health. The Director will be expected to teach and mentor students in the MHA, establish or continue a research program appropriate for tenure-track or tenured position and generally contribute to the research, teaching and professional service mission of the Program in Public Health.
The mission of the MHA Program is to prepare entry level and mid-career healthcare management professionals to have the competencies necessary to lead in the health care sector in response to emerging administrative leadership and population health needs. The curriculum is 51 credit hours and can be completed in no fewer than 2 years, with most students following a part-time plan of study that can be completed in up to 5 years after matriculation. In the 2023-2024 academic year we matriculated 50 qualified students with a total of 106 students actively pursuing the MHA degree. The MHA offered by Stony Brook is currently the only such degree offered in the 64-campus SUNY system and the only public University offering the degree in the state of New York.
The Director is responsible for overseeing the MHA Program. The Director will teach up to 2 courses in the program per year, work closely with the professional staff and related committees for admissions, recruitment, curriculum, alumni relations, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. The Director will be responsible for managing the ongoing CAHME re-accreditation and compliance with CAHME standards. In addition, the incumbent will manage relationships with students and alumni, the MHA Advisory Committee, attend national conferences and local events that promote the program (ACHE, AUPHA, ASPPH, APHA, HLNY) and collaborate with the Executive Director of the PPH to enhance the program’s standing among MHA programs. The Director will work with PPH admissions staff to manage the annual admissions process. The Director will lead ongoing efforts to raise the visibility of the MHA Program within the health care professional community and interacting with local, state and national health care institutions, and exploring opportunities for collaborating with other Stony Brook Medicine units, including the Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, the New York State Long Island Veterans Home, and many ambulatory, specialty care, and primary care centers.
The salary for this position is $130,000.00-$150,000 per year.
Program in Public Health
In addition to the MHA, the Program in Public Health includes an accredited MPH program, designed to be a small, highly selective program, admitting 35-50 new students each year. The PPH also offers an MS in Epidemiology and Clinical Research, a PhD offering two concentrations: Clinical Outcomes Research and Population Health, and an advanced graduate certificate in Health Education and Promotion. We aim to produce creative, critical thinkers who will effect positive social change. Researchers in Public Health work with collaborators across the campus, the Stony Brook Medicine health system community partners, and beyond to ensure that education and research are integrative and dynamic. Faculty areas of research focus on health disparities, aging, trauma/intimate partner violence, child/adolescent health, sexual/reproductive health, global health, environmental health, clinical outcomes research, and health services research.
