Are you a science teacher who is passionate about engaging students in real-life labs & experiments… and pushing them to think, write, and speak like scientists? A small & supportive middle school in the South Bronx is looking for someone like you!
The South Bronx Early College Academy Charter School (“SBECA”), is seeking passionate, energetic, and creative individuals to join our team. SBECA is a small, neighborhood charter school on East 156th Street that proudly serves over 300 wonderful scholars in grades six through eight. We strive to provide a rigorous and comprehensive liberal arts education through a challenging, New York State (NYS) Common Core standards-aligned curriculum.
We are currently seeking a science teacher to join us for the second semester this school year — a teacher with a background in any area of science, or a teacher of Special Education with knowledge & interest in teaching science. (And this includes new teachers finishing grad school or looking for the place to start their teaching career.)
SBECA is committed to creating an environment for the whole community – teachers, students, and families – to grow together. Every teacher will be a part of a small grade level team that will provide them with academic support from a veteran teacher in their content area, SEL (social-emotional learning) professional development from a member of our social work team, and coaching and high impact feedback from a leader. Teachers will be asked to develop lessons with their team that engage students in relevant tasks that are truly interesting! Teachers also lead “advisory” groups that are designed to develop strong and meaningful relationships with our students and families.
As a teacher, you will:
NYS Certification in Science or Special Education (or K-6 or general NYS licenses if you have interest/experience in science) is preferred. Teachers without NYS certification are invited to apply — specific exceptions are possible based on the candidate’s qualifications and graduate school study. Current graduate students are also encouraged to apply if they are intending to finish a degree in education & earn their licensing within the next year.
The school’s salary scale typically exceeds the UFT/NYCDOE salary scale by 5% for similarly qualified candidates. SBECA is an independent charter school that offers continued membership in the DOE’s TRS/TDA Pension system. We are conveniently located near the 2 and 5 subway lines and have parking for staff. We invite candidates to apply via Indeed or email Careers@sbecacs. org directly for more information.
