ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
The Society of Presidential Historians in Academia (SOPHIA) was founded in 2023 to
serve as an academic organization devoted to the study of the American presidency. Unlike other historical and political associations that
focus on a much broader scope, SOPHIA is exclusively about the U.S. presidents. Also, although SOPHIA is primarily geared toward history and
political science professors and students, it is open to anyone interested in joining.
SOPHIA will provide opportunities for
those interested and qualified to be considered for being published in our annual peer-reviewed journal and present at our annual
conference.
SOPHIA embarked on a national launch this past March. The vision for SOPHIA’s future is: 1) to grow to at least 150
members in the first year (but preferably more) so as to properly sustain an annual journal and conference; 2) to host lively intellectual
discourse about the presidents (for members only) on its website; 3) to serve as a forum where presidential scholars and enthusiasts can
socialize and network; 4) to establish a sound methodology to evaluate U.S. presidents; and 5) within three to five years, to hold a
Presidential Rankings Convention and issue a publication formalizing the results.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Executive Board reports directly to the President and advises the President on all matters. Executive Board members are expected
to:
The position is part-time and there is no formal minimum or
maximum time to be allotted. It is based on results and service as reasonably needed. Although the position is non-paying, once SOPHIA grows
large enough to sustain paid salaries, the expectation is that there will be compensation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate degree in history or political science (or related field) strongly preferred, but not required.
Strong knowledge and a
strong interest in the U.S. presidents and their presidencies.
If you are excited about the establishment of a presidential
history society and want to be a leader in helping it grow and flourish, please email your resume/CV to the Executive Team at: [email protected]
Also, please include
a cover letter that addresses these three issues:
SOPHIA does not discriminate in any manner regarding race, nationality, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or political ideology. SOPHIA embraces diversity of all kind and believes it strengthens the quality of the overall intellectual discourse.
