Educational and Experience Requirement:
Bachelor’s degree. No experience required. Knowledge of Sam Houston Student student recruitment activities, admissions policies, and university procedure would be helpful. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education.
This position specifically serves the Central Texas area.
Residence is preferably located in Central Texas (San Marcos, Austin, or the surrounding area).
Nature & Purpose of Position:
Responsible for translating the goals and values of the University to all categories of prospective students. Participates in those activities involving the projection of the University’s image to the public, assisting the student’s transition into the University, keeping the University aware of changing characteristics of students, and securing for the University the students who can best profit from the educational opportunities offered by the University. Assists in reviewing applications for admissions and making decisions on admittance or denial to the University.
Primary Responsibilities:
Participates in the total academic student recruiting program. Visits high schools, junior/ community colleges, organizations, etc. as required, as part of the total student recruiting effort, with the primary focus being those schools in an assigned territory. Assists in reviewing applications for admissions and making decisions on admittance or denial to the University. Provides telephone calls and emails to prospective students and their parents, high school counselors, college and career counselors, and community college advisors. Assists in developing marketing techniques for the recruitment of students. Makes contact with former students and with student organizations to assist in academic recruiting. Assists in coordinating campus visit requests and tours by potential students and parents. Assists with Saturday visitation programs, Orientation events, High School/Community College Counselor Conferences, and any other recruitment-related events as identified by the University. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications:
Computer skills strongly desirable. Regular contact with prospective students, parents, alumni, other state agencies and officials, junior/community college officials, and high schools and their officials. May require extensive travel during the fall semester (from the middle of September, through the middle of December). Also may require some weeks of travel during the spring semester. Must be reliable, personable, exhibit a positive image for the University, and be able to analyze large amounts of applicant information with precision and insight. Must also possess the ability to communicate effectively with a varied range of visitors and work in a high traffic area with several distractions. Requires driving and operating a University vehicle; therefore, a valid Texas driver’s license and driving record acceptable to the University’s insurance carrier is required. The ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
