ABOUT FLORIDA POLY INFORMATION TECHONLOGY SERVICES:
The Information Technology Services (ITS) division at Florida Poly pursues the vision of enabling Florida Poly to be a leader among STEM institutions in the innovative use of information technology to transform teaching and learning, empower research, improve the student experience and student success, enable date-driven management and decision-making, and effectively conduct University operations and services. Our teams are staffed by energetic professionals who pursue service excellence, seek innovation and continuous improvement, and operate effectively in a highly collaborative environment. We are in the midst of a major transformation of IT infrastructures, architectures, and service delivery models at Florida Poly in support of the University’s new five-year strategic plan. Our strategic initiatives include business systems modernization, IT service management, business process management, next-generation network services, cybersecurity automation, data ware and business intelligence, and cloud migration.
Reporting to the Vice President and CIO, ITS is organized into seven teams including Academic Technology, IT Support Services, Networking, IT Security, Platforms and Systems Engineering, DevOps (including both data engineering and application engineering), and IT Solutions Delivery.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Network Technician works under the direction of the Chief Information Security Officer and in collaboration with the Network Operations Team Engineers and performs skilled and technical duties related to the help design, implement, maintenance, troubleshooting, analyze, and maintaining of networks and telecommunication for the University. The Network Technician helps Network Operations team to address a broad range of networking projects that address critical organizational needs. The Network Technician is responsible for monitoring and responding to trouble tickets, troubleshooting network issues, and deploying network equipment as needed to assist in the assured continued operation of the University’s network.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Monitors and responds to trouble tickets submitted by users and/or help desk staff to ensure timely resolution to network related issues.
Assists network operations team in troubleshooting and resolving network-related problems.
Utilize various network monitoring tools to monitor the network and to respond to network incidents.
Assist in the network deployment, maintenance, design and implementation of LAN/WAN converged networks and network upgrades from cabling design to switching, routing, and wireless. Tests connections, installs, and decommissions UPS, cables and equipment.
Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for all implemented networks and devices.
Update skills on a regular basis to keep abreast of rapidly changing technology with willingness. Stay up to date with evolving industry standards for networking technologies, standards, and practices.
Contributes to the success of the team by performing all other duties as needed to drive the vision, fulfill the mission, and abide by the values of the University.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Basic understanding of LANs, WANs, and wireless networks. Network cabling design standards. Network switching, network routing protocols, VPN, wireless access installation and problem resolution.
Knowledge of best practices in troubleshooting technology related issues and in networking.
General knowledge of OSI network model, Ethernet, and TCP/IP networking.
General knowledge of enterprise-level network devices, network monitoring and management tools.
General knowledge of Cloud Service Provider network environments (AWS, Azure).
General knowledge of enterprise-level tools and products to provide network services, including firewalls, IPS/IDS, DNS, DHCP, web security, TACACS+, VPN and NAC.
Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
Ability to work “off hours” to implement changes and solutions to limit impact/exposure to users.
Prioritize and multitask to meet deadlines/timeframes.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma and equivalent work experience. Associate’s degree preferred, preferably in computer science, telecommunications, information technology.
At least 1-2 years of relevant work experience as a network technician or similar role.
In lieu of a degree, any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
PHYSICAL DEMAND AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 5 to 70 pounds; visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Subject to sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting, and kneeling to perform the essential functions. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment.
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW:
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
This position requires a criminal background check, which may include a Level II screening as required by Florida Statute §435.04.
This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.
NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: This position is salary exempt. The normal work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; however, occasional overtime (weekends and evenings) may be required. Travel between campus locations may be required. This position is eligible for hybrid work schedule.
TARGET HIRING SALARY & BENEFITS: Up to $55,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical, personal, and parental leave, State of Florida health insurance and retirement plans.
