This position functions within the Agricultural Service Lab by performing analytical testing of samples, with an emphasis on research samples, and researches, develops, and implements new methods and procedures. Additionally, this position performs tasks such as equipment maintenance, ordering supplies, and other duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES:
40% – Essential – Sample analysis:
Analyze specific contents (i.e., P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Mn, B, Na, S, NO3-N, NH4-N, N, C, etc.) of samples. Follow detailed procedures and operate analytical instruments, i.e., combustion analyzer, ICP, and nitrate-N analyzer, chromatograph, etc. Calculate, record, and verify test results for required reporting purposes. Generate reports using laboratory databases.
30% – Essential – Soil Section Improvements:
Coordinate with soil section staff and lab manager to facilitate improvements in lab procedures, methods, and equipment. Keep abreast with current research and technology, including searching relevant literature, to inform improvements. Communicate with lab director as new procedures should be developed and equipment should be installed. Document and instruct other staff in use of new instrumentation, methods, and procedures.
Collaborates with lab director and appropriate extension faculty and staff to update and develop services provided by the laboratory to meet growers’ needs in the area of soil-testing and other agricultural testing.
15% – Essential – Other Lab Responsibility:
Perform other related duties as required for the orderly operation and maintenance of the facility. Manage timely flow of samples and results output. Order required chemicals and consumable supplies required for daily operation. Maintain general laboratory, glassware, and equipment for cleanliness and serviceability, and other duties as assigned.
10% – Essential – Research sample handling:
Manages the intake and preparation of research samples from on-campus and off-campus clients. Communicates effectively with clients to ensure laboratory procedural compliance and satisfactory analytical service.
5% – Essential – Inter-lab coordination:
Coordinates with staff in other laboratories to provide requested laboratory services to clients.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education – 1st Master’s Degree
Relevant experience in laboratory with focus on chemistry, biology, soil or plant sciences
Work Exp 2+ years
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Education – 1st Doctoral / Professional Degree
Education Area -Chemistry, biological, soil, or plant sciences
Expertise in evaluating methods and procedures for efficacy and in implementation of instrumentation and methods
Work Exp 5+ years
