2023-2024 Resident Assistant Position Description

Resident Assistants (RA) are student-leaders who live and work in residential communities. RAs are assigned to serve in either Laker Hall (suite style) or Laker Village (apartment style). Each RA resides on a floor, or in an area, with a group of 16 to 50 residents. The RA position places a high value on relationships and integrity. It requires flexibility, commitment, and excellence, as well as strong administrative skills. Through this role, RAs will develop personal leadership skills, create purposeful connections with residents and peers, and gain transferable skills that will benefit future career aspirations.
Responsibilities
Community Building
RAs are expected to live in their assigned spaces nightly, establishing visibility with the community.
RAs should be developing relationships with residents and facilitate community events.
Support community initiatives (if applicable) such as the Pre-Nursing, Barbershop Initiative, EmpowHER Initiative, (Theme, and Living-Learning Communities), Welcome Week, and Orientation.
RAs will work to engage all residents towards advancing a sense of belonging, academic success, personal development, well-being, and enriched diverse experiences in the community.
Develop interpersonal relationships with residents through one-on-one interactions.
Programming
RAs are responsible for programming efforts, bulletin boards, newsletters, and door decorations. RAs are responsible for hosting engaging events to help residents get to know each other, get more connected to Clayton State University, and have fun! RAs have a reputation for creating some amazing Clayton State traditions that will be here for years to come.
RAs are generally assigned to groups with fellow RAs to host events for their hall, buildings, and campus.
RAs receive access to the housing budget to fund these programs.
Laker Hall Community Desk
The Laker Hall Community Desk is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week and is always staffed by either a Community Assistant or a Resident Assistant to assist residents, monitor activity, and help ensure the safety of the building.
Resident Assistants staff the desk on the weekdays Monday- Friday from 5:00 pm-8:00 am and the entirety of the weekends starting Friday at 5:00 pm.
RAs will have an opportunity to select their preferences for their desk shifts during Fall 2023 RA Training. The desk schedule is typically created at the beginning of each semester.
After Hours Duty
The Housing and Residence Life team at Clayton State University provides service to students 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. RAs serve as first responders after hours when the housing office is closed by being on duty.
RAs will serve on weekday duty days every three weeks. Weekday duty is Sunday ¿ Thursday from 5:00 PM – to 8:00 AM
RAs will serve on weekend duty 1-2 weekends in the semester. Weekend duty is Friday ¿ Sunday from 5:00 PM – 5:00 PM
RAs also assist in working duty during breaks.
RAs will have an opportunity to select preferences for their duty shifts during Fall 2023 RA Training. The duty schedule Is typically created at the beginning of the semester.

RAs are responsible for informing the Residence Directors of any circumstances that may have an impact on your qualifications.
Ability to handle multiple tasks and competing deadlines.
Currently enrolled at Clayton State University
At the time of employment, you must have lived on campus at Clayton State University for at least one semester.
Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 at the time of employment.
Students who are currently involved on campus by attending events or being members of on-campus student organizations are preferred.
Pass a Criminal Background Check conducted by Clayton State University Human Resources.
In good standing with the University at the time of application and acceptance of the position as well as throughout the position including no disciplinary sanctions pending or currently in effect.
Proposed Salary
RAs will receive a stipend amount of $906 for the academic year.
Laker Hall RAs receive a single-room suite.
Laker Village RAs receive priority preference for roommates.
RAs will receive a meal plan covered by housing. This meal plan includes 9 meals and one guest swipe per week.

Terms of Employment
The 2023-2024 Resident Assistant position is an academic-year commitment. The academic year is defined as the fall and spring semesters. In order to be eligible for the 2023-2024 RA position, you must be graduating on or after May 2024.
Reappointment for additional academic years is not guaranteed but may be available based on performance and the successful completion of all applications, satisfactory supervisory evaluations, and interviews.
RAs may be terminated at any time based on their job performance, academics, and any changes to their conduct standings. These items are interrelated and are not independent of each other.
RAs are students first and must maintain balance while serving in the position. The RA position is the RA’s principal non-academic activity. Extra-curricular activities should not conflict with the time needed to perform effectively as an RA throughout the entire year including, but not limited to, meetings, training, duty shifts, desk shifts, and community building. The RA is expected to be available and accessible to students in their community throughout the year.
