CHIEF ASSISTANT CORPORATION COUNESL – LIP DIVISION
The City of Chicago Law Department is seeking an attorney for the position of Chief Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Legal Information and Prosecutions Division to represent and supervise other attorneys in the representation of the City in Freedom of Information Act (FOIA matters), and Local Records Act matters. The Chief Assistant Corporation Counsel will work under the supervision of the Deputy of the LIP Division and will work closely with various City departments and officials, including the Mayor’s Office, regarding document identification and production in response to FOIA requests. The Chief Assistant Corporation Counsel will have significant responsibility on various matters, including but not limited to client counseling and training on FOIA, record retention, record preservation and record production uses, drafting FOIA responses and Public Access Counselor (PAC) appeal letters, and handling litigation in state and federal court. The Chief Assistant Corporation Counsel will also represent City witnesses in matters where they are not a Party. The Chief Assistant Corporation Counsel will be responsible for both supervising and handling all phases of litigation on his or her own cases, including preparing pleadings and motions of varying complexity, appearing in court for case management conferences, settlement conferences and motion hearings, drafting discovery, and drafting and arguing motions for summary judgment. This work involves voluminous document reviews, awareness briefings and redaction projects. The ability to organize groups and manage workflow is essential. The ability to complete assignments with short deadlines is imperative. Excellent judgment, logic, the ability to think and act quickly, and the ability to effectively counsel and communicate with and counsel high level officials, are also essential.

Graduation from an American Bar Association accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree, and admission to the Illinois Bar (or eligible for admission on motion to the Illinois Bar pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 705).
