ABOUT MUSIC AT CALVIN
The music faculty at Calvin are a part of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, located in the beautiful Covenant Fine Arts Center, renovated and expanded in 2010 to include more teaching studios and practice rooms, both an Auditorium and Recital Hall, and a dedicated music technology lab with capacity to support teaching, composition, and digital music production. Music faculty equip undergraduate students to be versatile musicians who can bring their gifts to a wide variety of contexts and vocations. The department supports a liberal arts music major and minor, serves 400+ students and community members who participate in ensembles and private lessons annually, and sponsors over 60 music events each year, including summer music camps and ensemble tours.
With our two faculty searches in 2023-2024, our vision is to shape a nimble and resourceful liberal arts music faculty that is motivated to directly engage at least 20% of all Calvin University students with a signature musical learning opportunity, to provide personalized attention to each student pursuing a major or minor in music, and to develop strategic opportunities for musical service, both locally and globally, in harmony with Calvin University’s strategic vision. Our faculty searches seek to shape a department with full-time faculty who are versatile musicians motivated to teach different kinds of courses. We are prioritizing plans to ensure that we have full-time faculty with expertise in four areas: composition/keyboard/piano, bands/winds, orchestra/strings, and choral/vocal music, and that we continue to strengthen a robust pool of part-time faculty, many of whom are leaders in arts organizations throughout West Michigan. Calvin is committed to providing a versatile liberal arts major and minor in music, to proactively redevelop programs to train music educators, and to prepare versatile students in every program on campus for musical activity in churches, schools, and communities.
