Posting Summary
This Team Lead position has responsibility for supervising and managing a portion of the Systems Architecture & Administration (SAA) department. This position is part of the SAA leadership team, with a focus on Research Computing services. This includes the Vermont Advanced Computing Center (VACC) clusters, as well as ETS’ research computing offerings such as research storage, virtualization platform for researcher VMs, and related technologies. This team lead is also responsible for technologies that support data collaboration (such as Globus) and tools that facilitate research data management plans. This team lead will also be responsible for evaluations of public cloud systems to augment our on-premises services for researchers.
While this team lead will be responsible for Research Computing, they will also make significant contributions to the SAA Infrastructure team since there is critical overlap in the priorities and technologies of those two teams. Such joint projects might include management of datacenter infrastructure, cooling, and power systems, security projects, Linux configuration management system, or other priority services for which the team lead is a subject matter expert. Collaboration between those two team leads is critical to the success of both teams.
This team lead will support our existing research computing portfolio, while also working to improve these services and bring new functionality to meet the needs of our researchers, in close collaboration with the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and the Office of the Vice President of Research (OVPR). This team lead will engage with researchers to ensure UVM’s IT research services enable faculty and support research. The efforts of this team lead will directly support UVM’s goal of becoming an R1 research institution. This team lead will also engage with broader research computing higher education communities. This team lead will contribute to grant submissions and work to architect systems and select technologies to include in grant applications, in support of researcher needs.
This position provides administrative supervision of staff focused on providing these research computing services. The Research Computing Team Lead will manage departmental projects and tasks with a university-wide impact and will assign work and ensure satisfactory completion of tasks by staff. The Team Lead will collaborate regularly with the CTO and other SAA Team Leads to ensure critical projects move ahead and coordinate efforts between the SAA teams since many SAA projects require expertise from more than one team. They will also help identify new initiatives that the department should undertake and work with the CTO to determine needed resources to advance the initiative.
While this position is a supervisory role, it is still primarily a senior technical role with approximately 70-75% of their time focused on technical aspects of the services they are responsible for. The team lead will serve as a mentor to staff and advocate for staff development and training. The Team Lead will initiate and manage projects; train other technical and operational staff; perform system tuning and troubleshooting; identify and implement security enhancements; perform capacity planning; and provide systems documentation.
