Job Summary/Basic Function
This position works under the general direction and in accordance with broad operating policies, using independent judgment to operate multiple complex computer systems and associated equipment within the Data Center. This person monitors console/system activities, performing high level problem analysis and resolution. The regular 40-hour work week is a 2nd shift position from 2:30 pm to 10:30 pm which may include a combination of shifts and scheduling changes to cover closures, vacation and/or sick leaves.
Minimum Qualifications
A high school diploma or GED and five years (FT) of related work experience, OR two years of post-secondary education and three years of (FT) related work experience. Excellent attention to detail to notice potential issues, escalation actions and to provide accurate documentation. Proficient in computer applications and incident workflows. Excellent customer service skills. Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to plan and direct work activities, to manage time effectively, and set priorities. Ability to troubleshoot and determine source of problems. Patient and flexible to adjust job responsibilities and schedules. Ability to maintain a positive relationship with customers and other vendors. A working knowledge of personal computers, computer networks and communications software. Experience with Physical Layer network documentation for patch cord installation and maintenance procedures. Basic network switch components and peripheral equipment. Entry level IT certifications such as: Splunk User, A+, Server+
Essential Functions and percent of time
30% – Monitors and maintains the console activities for the systems residing in the main data center and remote locations including job scheduling, video monitoring, access control, data center infrastructure management and computer network monitoring. Handle administrative tasks from systems mentioned above. Understand escalation procedures as well as which problems require immediate escalation and escalate as required.
20% – Routinely review log reports of the security software Splunk and determine which logs require immediate escalation.
15% – Perform duties such as hard drive removal/destruction, media shredding, paper stocking, check printing and scanning projects. Assist co-location clients with questions, troubleshooting, modifying equipment and picking up equipment from receiving, while providing excellent customer service. Be mindful of the clean room atmosphere policies when items are brought into the data center and periodically clean the floor and surfaces throughout the data center.
15% – Create, update and maintain the daily turnover log of shift activity and all incidents that occur, steps taken to resolve and the status updates. Ability to escalate incidents to the appropriate support team in a timely manner. Update and maintain documentation that is missing or outdated.
10% – Act as first response for environmental equipment emergencies including HVAC issues, water detection, fire suppression panels and physical security. Assists HVAC and Casualty Prevention in identification and follow up. Understand emergency procedures and policies.
5% – Maintain and guarantee physical security of the data center infrastructure by verifying and correctly registering visitors through the visitor management system while challenging unauthorized access and/or obtaining authorization from a proper source.
5% – Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned. Troubleshoot peripheral equipment such as printers, sealers, network switches and servers. Serve “on call” and resolve problems as needed.
Working Conditions
Lifting up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders, physically capable of working under the raised floor, bending down to service lower mounted equipment. White noise environment. Clean room environment. Must navigate data center within 60 seconds to respond to Fire Suppression alarms and/or vacate area. Serves as an Essential Personnel for remaining on site or reporting in for duty during university closures or after-hours.
