The Early Childhood Education Academic and Career Advisor will guide student success through personalized quality academic advising, career exploration, and transfer planning The advisor oversees an assigned caseload of Early Childhood Education students, attracting, enrolling, retaining, and upskilling incumbent members of the Early Childhood workforce. This position supports of the Student Success and Retention Division’s strategic plan of proactively engaging students in attaining their educational goals throughout their lifespan at Waubonsee and the Early Childhood Access Consortium for Equity Act’s purpose to advance racial equity through an expanded higher education pipeline. This position reports directly to the Academic and Career Advising Manager and indirectly to the Early Childhood Grants Manager. It is supported through a grant funded by the Early Childhood Access Consortium for Equity (ECACE) Act.
Responsibilities
Participate in recruiting students for the Early Childhood Education program, partnering with ECACE navigators, the Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies, the Illinois Network of Child Care Resources and Referral Agencies, high school teachers and counselors, Valley Education Employment Services, employers, and community members to identify prospective students, meeting with individual and groups of prospective students to present the Early Childhood Education program, and supporting new/returning students through the Waubonsee enrollment process.
Serve as the central point of contact for the Early Childhood Education students, providing one-on-one and group support to ensure each student persists, advances, and completes his/her studies, pursues his/her Illinois Gateways credentials, and follows the transfer pathway to a bachelor’s degree program. Connect students to Admissions, the Development Office, Financial Aid, Learning Assessment and Testing Services, Registration and Records, Student Accounts and Cashier Office, faculty, and other Waubonsee, community, and government assistance resources as necessary and appropriate.
Provide holistic academic and career advising services to Early Childhood Education students, including course selection, choosing a major, certificate pathways, degree pathways, Illinois Gateways credentialing, university transfer planning, and all aspects of career planning.
Interpret assessment results and explain placement and other equivalencies to Early Childhood Education students.
Identify, track, and report the number of incumbent workforce members.
Provide support for Early Childhood Education students interested in the Early Childhood Access Consortium for Equity Scholarship, assisting and referring them to Financial Aid as necessary and appropriate, tracking the progress of students through the process from application to decision, and reconciling the number of students with reporting.
Provide support for Early Childhood Education students interested in prior learning assessment credit for the Child Development Associate, assisting and referring them to the College of Liberals Arts and Sciences and/or Records and Registration as necessary and appropriate, tracking the progress of students through the process from application to recording of credit, and reporting the number of students.
Monitor, contact and follow-up with Early Childhood Education students. Utilize college advising technology to identify and provide positive feedback for students who are achieving academic success and interventions for students who are most at risk for academic difficulty. Support distribution of ECACE grant awards (laptops, e-textbook access, etc.)
Provide Illinois Gateways support for Early Childhood Education students interested in credentialing, notifying students of their eligibility and assisting students in the application process.
Provide transfer advising to Early Childhood Education students interested in attending four-year colleges and universities. Use transfer articulation technology and university partnership agreements to help students optimize their course selection toward their four-year degrees. Assist with connecting students to key staff at transfer universities, and with university and scholarship applications.
Facilitate in coordination with Student Success and Retention (Student Development Unit, Student Success and Retention Division), Admissions (Strategy and Community Development), and Early Childhood Education (Educational Affairs Unit, Liberal Arts and Science, Visual and Performing Arts, Education, and Sciences Division) activities related to new student orientation, group advising and classroom presentations. Utilize a variety of technology modalities to achieve learning outcomes goals.
Educate Early Childhood Education students and job seekers on current trends in preparing resumes and cover letters, how to conduct job search activities, and applying for jobs.
Play a leadership/coordinating role in the Early Childhood Education area of expertise (i.e., new student onboarding, Early Childhood Access Consortium for Equity Scholarship, Early Childhood Education programs, prior learning assessment for Child Development Associate, academic probation, credentials through Illinois Gateways) and provide training and support for colleagues in that area.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required. A degree or credit hours in Early Childhood Education is a plus.
Two years of successful experience in a position involving public contact in an educational setting or an equivalent combination of training or experience is required. Experience in Early Childhood Education is a plus. Experience with case management is a plus.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proven successful experience working with diverse populations. Bilingual (Spanish/English) fluency is a plus.
Proficient in Microsoft Office 365, TEAMS, and enterprise-wide systems (Banner) and data bases (Salesforce).
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Familiarity with college advising and degree audit software is a plus.
Flexibility and ability to handle multiple priorities. Must be willing and available to work at more than one campus, work a maximum of two evenings per week and four Saturdays per year, and travel to off-site meetings.
