Summary of Duties:
The position is defined as 80% diagnostic service/outreach/clinical teaching, 15% research/ scholarly activity, and 5% academic service.
The successful applicant will be expected to provide general laboratory oversight and leadership of the WADDL Avian Health and Food Safety Laboratory. Duties will include: a) Branch Chief of the WADDL-Puyallup Laboratory; b) provision of diagnostic service and outreach in avian health, with a primary emphasis in commercial egg laying and backyard poultry, and where appropriate exotic and wild birds; c) general oversight of food safety/microbiology diagnostic services in collaboration with the laboratory manager; d) small group instruction of fourth year veterinary students in the avian medicine block rotation and avian disease diagnostics for post-DVM veterinary anatomic pathology and microbiology residents, d) scholarly activity associated with collaborative research and publication of diagnostic case materials, and e) academic service.
The Branch Chief responsibilities include working in collaboration with the full-time laboratory manger providing oversight of avian diagnostic and food safety testing, while the laboratory manager provides direct supervision of microbiology, molecular diagnostics, and serology staff and expertise in food safety testing. WADDL-Puyallup is a USDA National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) Level 1 laboratory and is accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) and the successful candidate is expected to engage with and help maintain WADDL’s standing within these organizations. Primary clinical service effort of the position is to provide avian diagnostics and flock health. These efforts will include working closely with commercial poultry producers and backyard flocks providing avian disease diagnostics (necropsy and other assays as appropriate), health subject matter expertise, and overall avian diagnostic case coordination. Outreach consists primarily of consultation, communication with and presentations to the poultry industry, backyard and exotic bird owners across Washington State. These activities are often in conjunction with the Washington State Department of Agriculture and State Veterinarian’s office, and Washington State Department of Health. Effort in food safety testing consists of general oversight and will be in collaboration with the full-time laboratory manger and staff which provide regulatory testing of eggs and egg products, meat, and environmental sampling as appropriate for food processing facilities. Effort towards scholarly activity includes engagement in collaborative research and other scholarly activity, with the expectation for publication of collaborative research and diagnostic laboratory case information as a primary or collaborating author. The collaborative research component includes effective diagnostic support for investigators throughout the College of Veterinary Medicine and the WSU campuses. There is no expectation to develop an independent extramurally funded research program. However, it is strongly encouraged to take advantage of ad hoc opportunities to secure funding from conservation groups, commodity groups, foundations, veterinary organizations, and national surveillance networks to augment scholarly activity and job responsibilities.
