Summary of Duties
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Safely operate and maintain all aspects of the DCS Impact Facilities, including the design, fabrication and assembly of experimental components and equipment.
Provide support on optical measurements prior to and after an experiment. This includes the set-up and configuration of the Multipoint VISAR or PDV system, and the initial analysis of the data to generate a wave profile.
Contribute effectively to all aspects of the experimental effort, including guidance and assistance to the DCS users; ordering experimental components, equipment, and supplies; and working effectively in a team setting.
Participate in the development and implementation of experimental techniques for a broad range of research projects involving high-velocity impacts. Participate in research experiments as needed; and prepare reports and publications as appropriate.

The DCS constitutes a new paradigm for understanding the dynamic compression and deformation response of materials on ns-µs time scales and at multiple length scales. Real-time, atomistic-scale investigations of condensed matter phenomena can be undertaken in single event experiments through time-resolved, in-situ measurements utilizing the tunable, high energy X-ray capabilities at the APS.
Required Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and experience performing professional-level work with scientific or engineering research protocols. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Experimental and analytical skills; understanding and knowledge of research theory; excellent organizational and project management skills.
A B.S. degree in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. For individuals with prior experience working in impact facilities, any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Strong academic background and excellent problem-solving skills.
Strong experimental background and hands-on experience with common laboratory equipment (e.g., vacuum equipment and pressure valves; control hardware; oscilloscopes; and sample preparation/characterization equipment, such as a lathe, mill, drill press, etc.)
Hands-on experience with fabrication and assembly of mechanical components.
Good computer skills, including experience with technical/design programs, such as LabView or SolidWorks, and working knowledge of data analysis software.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Critical thinking, good judgment, clear sense of purpose, attention to detail, and accountability.
Excellent interpersonal skills necessary for functioning positively in a multi-disciplinary team and working with users.
Must be able to obtain a badge at U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories to gain access to restricted areas.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in research related to dynamic compression experiments.

Monthly Salary: $5,833 – $7,500 | In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range. For additional information, please review WSU’s Administrative Professional Compensation. This is a Temporary position in which the appointment is made on an annual basis. Subsequent renewals are based on performance, mutual consent, and the continuation of the research funding.
