Information Technology Services pursues a “Cloud First” philosophy, utilizing cloud resources as a preference, but hosting locally (or hybrid) depending on security, scalability, performance, affordability, and other factors. The Systems Architect is a key member of the customer service-oriented Core Systems team and provides level two support to faculty, staff, and students in a quality, high availability environment for the University community.

This position is hybrid remote/in-office. The Washington and Lee University campus is located in Lexington, Virginia, an historic city of 7,000 residents, in the Shenandoah Valley. Lexington is a two-hour drive to Richmond and a 3-hour drive to Washington, DC. Charlottesville, Roanoke, and Harrisonburg are all within about an hour drive.

Essential Functions:
Writes, maintains, and troubleshoots PowerShell scripts, REST API, JSON files using GIT repository and JAMS to manage servers and cloud services. This includes maintaining necessary modules for cloud services management and using PowerShell commands to perform administrative tasks on cloud resources such as Office 365, Okta, and Box.
Install, manage, and maintain Microsoft Windows and Linux Servers in both a virtual and physical environment.
Work with Microsoft technologies such as DHCP, DNS, Active Directory, IIS management, and basic SQL server functions.
Provide Level two support and interaction with vendor support for server-based systems (virtual, physical, or hybrid).
Administer and manage technologies such as Okta, Box, DUO, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Entra ID, and other cloud service providers.
Assist in management of the University data centers as needed.
Ability to prioritize based on multiple demands.
Familiarity with virtualization technologies such as VMware, AWS, Azure, etc.
Familiarity with backup solutions and methodologies such as Veeam or other backup software solutions.
Follow the ITS Information Security Program and industry standard best practices to help ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all IT resources.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
The System Architect should have a Bachelor’s degree and at least four years’ experience in a technology support environment, preferably in higher education or a combination of education and experience from which a similar skillset would be obtained.
Certifications are preferred, however not required.
Candidates should possess skills related to: Windows Server design and management. Support and implementation of DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, AWS, Azure, mail systems, server file systems, storage arrays, fiber channel/ iSCSI.
Infrequent travel may be necessary.
