Job Summary:
The Community Development Extension Educator serves the people and communities of Wisconsin by addressing local, statewide, and national issues; improving lives through research-based education; fostering partnerships and action; and facilitating positive impacts that support: effective organizations; healthy and vibrant communities; strong economies; and meaningful youth engagement in community.
This Community Development Extension Educator position will serve Forest County, WI and surrounding communities by designing, delivering, and evaluating research-based educational programming and services aligned with the position’s programmatic focus: effective community organizations, leadership, and civic engagement for youth and adults.
This position will also play a lead role in supporting education and research related to rural youth and adult leadership development. As part of the position’s county-based work, the Community Development Extension Educator connects Forest County and its communities to other Community Development and Extension resources and supports priority local initiatives through the facilitation of group and community engagement processes.
Details:
Programmatic Focus: Effective community organizations, leadership, and civic engagement for youth and adults.
Examples of this work may include:
* Assessing leadership development needs of community serving organizations (e.g. nonprofits, coalitions, school districts, local governments) and developing educational responses (e.g. workshops, leadership roundtables, professional development series), including resources on the meaningful engagement of youth in community decision-making.
* Providing support in creating networks throughout the county to address priority issues (e.g. issues identified as part of the Rural Partners Network grant) in the following ways: connect individuals and groups with shared interests, provide training and resources on group process, assist group with adopting appropriate structures and policies that support their ongoing work, assist group with effectively engaging youth in the work of shaping responses to priority issues, facilitate group action planning and goal setting, and advise on evaluation strategies.
* Working with local and Tribal governments, and nonprofits to design and deliver programs that enhance community participation. The specific program will be agreed upon with partners, but could include:
* A program for residents to learn about government, build relationships with government officials, and learn how to work with the local and Tribal governments to address needs in the community.
* A program that builds the leadership skills and civic engagement of youth through serving on local boards and decision-making bodies.
* Facilitating processes that help community members, organizations, and coalitions (e.g Forest County Community Coalition) develop action plans that address local issues of concern.
Meeting Other Local Needs:
The Community Development Extension Educator will prioritize and spend most of their time on a clearly defined programmatic focus: effective community organizations, leadership, and civic engagement for youth and adults.
To the degree local needs shift or other programmatic needs arise, the Forest County Community Development Educator will serve as the primary conduit for the community to access the appropriate research and educational resources, if they are available within the Community Development Institutes. The educator serves as the ‘on-ramp’ for the community to access the wide range of resources in Extension. Examples of such resources include: local government training, assistance with housing needs studies, broadband, and increasing the capacity of adults in working with youth throughout the communities served.
Recognizing that, regardless of programmatic area of focus, Educators may be called upon to support the facilitation of community and group processes (e.g. action planning, visioning, group decision-making), all Community Development Educators will have these core competencies and support these efforts as resources allow.
Statewide Contributions:
Educators are expected to contribute to statewide efforts related to their area of focus. Through their statewide work, the Educators are connected to the most current research, best practices, programming, and networks. They bring that expertise back to the county for application to local issues and needs.
This particular Community Development Educator will play a lead role in supporting education and research related to rural youth and adult leadership development efforts. The Governor’s Blue Ribbon Commission explicitly named rural leadership development as a key priority in the state. This position will play an important role in ensuring Extension is responding to that need.
Responsibilities:
