Job no: 253554-AS
Work type: Partial Remote, Staff-Full Time
Department:EDUC/DANCE
Location: Madison
Categories: Teaching and Instruction of For-credit Courses
Job Summary:
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Dance Department is hiring a visionary leader as part of a bold plan to bring dance education to Wisconsin public schools. The inaugural Arnhold Director of Dance Education, in partnership with colleagues in the Dance Department and across the School of Education, will:
* Design, implement, and direct a dance education curriculum in the UW-Madison School of Education, teaching a minimum of one course per semester
* Network and collaborate with school districts, locally, regionally, and statewide to create partnerships and pathways for future dance teachers
* Develop, implement, and lead K-12 dance programming locally and beyond
* Effectively advocate for dance education regionally and statewide
The Arnhold Directorship in Dance Education is made possible by a transformational gift from dance advocate, educator, and founder of the Dance Education Laboratory, Jody Gottfried Arnhold and her husband John Arnhold, through the School of Education’s Morgridge Match Impact 2030 initiative. With this gift, the Dance Department, the nation’s first degree program in Dance, continues its legacy in the field of dance education research, teaching, and outreach.
The UW-Madison Dance Department is a leader and innovator in the field of dance. Our institution was the first in the nation to establish a dance degree program in higher education. It was here, on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in 1926, under the leadership of dance pioneer Margaret H’Doubler, that dance became a rigorous academic discipline, and the body became the route to scientific inquiry, self-discovery, creativity, and citizenship. Our department and its world-class faculty and professional staff are committed to excellence through teaching and research, and we strive to impact the world within and outside of the university, through the Wisconsin Idea, with the aim to improve people’s lives through dance. In addition to our BFA and BS degree programs in dance, the department offers four certificates (Dance, Dance Studies, Dance/Movement Therapy, and Pilates), brings elective dance courses to hundreds of students each semester, and welcomes pre-collegiate students to campus for summer intensive study and dance festivals. We also produce several concerts and host internationally renowned guest artists each academic year. Our dedicated dance space–the beautifully renovated historic Lathrop Hall–is located in the heart of UW-Madison, near Lake Mendota, the state capitol, and downtown Madison. Our facility includes five spacious dance studios, a Pilates equipment lab, and the H Doubler Performance Space, a 240-seat proscenium theater.
