Other Conditions: Contingent on course offerings and student demand, to begin approximately January 2024, availability of funds, and actual staffing requirements. The position may be converted from 11 to 9 months or 9 to 11 months based on operational needs. Duties and ResponsibilitiesUnder general supervision by the Paralegal Program Director, design, deliver, and assess engaging instruction in a variety of face-to-face and online courses currently offered in the Paralegal program. Develop and/or regularly update course content and materials and teaching and assessment strategies and methods to:assist student attainment of learning outcomes,address the learning needs of the college’s diverse student population,integrate critical thinking and writing skills into course content, as appropriate,use technology in instruction.Be currently proficient and maintain proficiency in at least five of the following content areas: legal research; civil investigation; law office management; litigation; business organizations; real property; tort and insurance law; family law; intellectual property; computer applications in the law office; legal document preparation; estate planning and probate; employment law; criminal law; legal interviewing, negotiation, and advocacy; legal writing; eDiscovery; advanced torts; and advanced litigation.Perform other teaching-related duties that include, but are not limited to, regularly updating curriculum, preparing course syllabi, maintaining appropriate office hours for students, and providing timely and consistent feedback to students, including prompt grading.Non-teaching duties include:Engaging in public service related to your professional status and/or expertise,Engaging in professional development,Engaging in professional activities related to law or teaching,Participate in service that supports the department and the college, such as membership on departmental or faculty senate committees.Assist in training lecturers.Collaborate with other paralegal program faculty to maintain the program’s American Bar Association approval status and submit other reports to the college as necessary. Engage with industry through participation in the Paralegal Advisory Committee meetings.Performing related duties as assigned.Regular workload will include evening classes and distance-education classes, and may include weekend classes. Minimum Qualifications
Law Degree AND Experience working with or as a paralegal AND Member in good standing of the Hawai‘i State barORBachelor’s degree in paralegal AND 3 years of related work experienceORAny bachelor’s degree AND 3 years of related work experience AND Recognized post baccalaureate paralegal certificate (Note: Registered Paralegal (RP) granted by NFPA (National Federation of Paralegal Associations); Certified Legal Assistant/Certified Paralegal (CLA/CP) granted by the Association of Legal Assistants (NALA); Professional Paralegal (PP) granted by NALS (the Association of Legal Professionals) Programs G-401) (2008). A bachelor’s degree in paralegal, any bachelor’s degree with a certificate and/or appropriate work experience meets this standard.) ORAny bachelor’s degree AND 5 years of related work experience

Desirable Qualifications Experience in teaching, especially at the post-secondary level, or substantial experience in training others in the area of law.Demonstrated ability to work in a collegial and collaborative manner with peers and supervisors.Current experience with or as a paralegal within the past two years.Proficiency in at least five of the following content areas: legal research; civil investigation; law office management; litigation; business organizations; real property; tort and insurance law; family law; intellectual property; computer applications in the law office; legal document preparation; estate planning and probate; employment law; criminal law; legal interviewing, negotiation, and advocacy; legal writing; eDiscovery; advanced torts; and advanced litigation.Understanding of the open-door mission of community colleges.Ability to write clear prose as substantiated by writing samples.Able to demonstrate clear verbal communication skills as demonstrated through an interview and teaching demonstration.Demonstrated competence with technology used in the law office, including Microsoft Office, either Westlaw or Lexis, email, and general internet use.Demonstrated ability to initiate, execute, and complete projects within deadlines, including setting specific objectives and measuring results.
