The Center for Electrochemical Science and Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Scientist who can facilitate sponsored research programs in the areas of scientific research involving corrosion and the science of local corrosion by morphogenic processes that transition to fatigue. The subject materials include Al alloys, magnesium alloys, and stainless steel. Other areas of research include compositionally complex alloy passivation and molten salt corrosion in the absence of passive films.
The successful candidate will conduct studies on multiple projects simultaneously and will possess extensive and demonstrated technical skills and experience with various experimental electrochemical techniques such as cyclic polarization, EIS, SVET, SKP, and SECM, as well as characterization methods such as SEM/EDS, XRD, XPS, ICP-OES, optical profilometry, and Raman; ability to analyze and interpret metallurgy, corrosion, and electrochemistry data in order to write papers and progress reports to sponsors; evidence of prior success in the form of archival publications on these topics is a significant plus. The Research Scientist will write proposals for sponsored research as well as oral and written progress reports to sponsors, mentor graduate students, and supervise undergraduate researchers.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering, including a thesis dissertation with an emphasis on corrosion and metallurgy, is required. Also required are at least 2 years of postdoctoral research experience at a research university, evidence of good written and oral English language skills to interact with various sponsors, attention to detail, good record keeping, strong analytical skills, and previous experience mentoring junior researchers (undergraduate and graduate students and postdocs).
