The American Sign Language (ASL) Program at the University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications for a Lecturer on the general faculty in American Sign Language beginning in the Spring semester 2023 with a term of 3.5 years. This is part-time (two courses each semester), tenure-ineligible position with benefits. This position requires in-person, live instruction (this is not an online instructional position) on a nine-month contract with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon available funding, satisfactory performance, and need for the position.
This is an ASL language instructional position teaching two Elementary I ASL courses in the fall semester and two Elementary II-level courses in the spring semester. The four-hour credit courses meet in classroom sections for which the Lecturer is responsible three times each week (MWF) in 50-minute classes. There is another drill/lab section that meets for more than an hour on Tuesday evenings. These sections that are taught by Drill Instructors and do not need to be attended by the classroom Lecturer.
Qualifications:
Our elementary-level ASL courses use a curriculum developed by the ASL Program utilizing the UVA “Collab” Course Management System and course website, but familiarity with the Signing Naturally or Mastering ASL curricula is a plus. Our language courses follow a strict “voice-off” classroom policy using no spoken language. We are looking for candidates who are enthusiastic, encouraging, and committed to excellence in teaching.
