Job Summary
The Director of Student
Activities and Advising shall be responsible for a comprehensive program which promotes and enhances the academic development of all
undergraduate and graduate students in in-person and online programs in the College of Social Work (CSW). The Director is responsible for
the management, strategic planning, and functioning of personnel and services in the office. This office is responsible for several areas
including but not limited to: academic advisement, student orientation/retention, transfer articulation, accommodations and enrollment
services.
Responsibilities
1. Manage academic advising services for students in undergraduate and
graduate degree and/or certificate programs in the CSW, with specific focus on: (1) Student recruitment/outreach; (2) Student orientations;
(3) Student academic advising; and (4) Student data analytics.
2. Manage and oversee academic advising services
for students in undergraduate degree and certificate programs in the CSW, including: admissions (calculate GPA and pre-requisite checks)
using OnBase, ApplyYourself, and other application tools; academic services; initiatives to promote student recruitment, retention, and
persistence to graduation; campus and community outreach for prospective social work students; new student orientation (first-year,
transfer, and program-specific events); pre-program advising; petitions for consideration of exception to policy (e.g. late and retroactive
withdrawals, revocation of CR/NC); undergraduate general education advising; degree audit exceptions and updates; course permission codes
and other key student enrollment processes; annual transfer articulation updates; annual curriculum management updates (in collaboration
with scheduler and program directors); advise students on majors, minors and certificates; content of advising-related portions of the CSW
website (regular updates provided to webmaster); Canvas community pages for undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs;
creation and regular updating of advising-related materials, such as degree and certificate checklists; graduation advising and clearance
(this does not include commencement); certificate completion/clearance; and assistance with marketing CSW learning abroad opportunities to
students.
3. Assess need for student academic and support services and make effective referrals to Associate Dean
for Academic Affairs, program directors, faculty and student resources on campus, especially for those who show signs of academic and
behavioral challenges.
4. Utilize university student success platforms and systems to collect and analyze student
data, which can be utilized in developing short- and long-term strategic goals for the undergraduate degree and/or certificate programs in
the College of Social Work (CSW), (i.e., strategic plans, proposals, reports and presentations-student/cohort needs, performance, and
progress over time.
5. Manage and supervise academic advising/support staff-hiring, training, professional
development, and performance evaluation.
6. Ensure that academic advising/support staff are properly prepared and
trained to provide exceptional academic advising/support services to all undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate students in the
CSW.
7. Provide strategic direction for the academic advising/support services unit by setting short- and long-term
goals for the academic advising/support staff.
8. Ensure that academic advising/support staff maintain active
involvement with key University partners, including: Academic Affairs and Student Affairs, such as Academic Advising Center, Student Success
Advocates, Women’s Resource Center, Dream Center, and others.
9. Ensure that academic advising/support staff
maintain active involvement in professional associations, including: NACADA and NASPA; and University associations, including: University
Academic Advising Community (UAAC) and Graduate Advisors Professional Association (GAPA).
10. Ensure that academic
advising/support staff maintain active involvement in the University Academic Advising Community (UAAC), including attendance at regular
UAAC and GAPA meetings and workshops/trainings, participation in/at UAAC conference, participation in/on UAAC and GAPA
committees/sub-committees.
11. Make academic advising/support staff recommendations to Associate Dean for Academic
Affairs.
12. Recruit, train and supervise student ambassadors and orientation leaders.
13.
Maintain current knowledge of University resources, critical dates, as well as policies and procedures for all students; assists with
implementation, interpretation, and evaluation of new policies and procedures.
14. Lead academic advising/support staff
meetings, retreats, and training sessions.
15. Serve as the lead person on University student-centered committees and
initiatives, such as: Campus Recruitment Council, Student Affairs Directors and Campus Partners meetings, UOnline Community of Practice,
Orientation and Transition, and First Year Experience and Sophomore Rise initiatives.
16. Maintain an advising
caseload.
17. Maintain advising notes on students in accordance with national standards and
practice.
18. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in
Business Administration, or related area, or equivalency; eight years of progressively more responsible management experience; and
demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required.
Master’s degree in Business Administration,
or related area preferred. This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.
