Reporting directly to the Dean, the Chief Administrative Officer is responsible for strategic and faculty planning and the delivery of all business administration for the Rotman School of Management. The CAO works directly with the Dean, Vice-Deans and other senior leaders across the University to develop integrated long-term plans that bridge academic and research aspirations.
The incumbent establishes the strategic direction and vision for the Rotman School of Management in consultation with the Dean and other senior members of the school administration and based upon knowledge of university goals and objectives. The CAO is responsible for providing vision, strategic direction, and financial management expertise in pursuit of the School’s evolving strategic academic, research and external stakeholder goals and for for ensuring that financial and operational resources are aligned to support the achievement of strategic and operational plans.
The CAO develops short and long-term financial plans, priorities and objectives for the Rotman School in collaboration with the Dean and the Executive team and within the decentralized financial and budget framework of the university and provides leadership to the financial administration and management at Rotman including financial planning and forecasting, budget analysis, purchasing, accounting, reporting and internal audit implementation to ensure that financial integrity is maintained, and revenue targets are met.
The CAO oversees and manages the School’s budget and financial plans including the financial oversight of 25 Centres and Institutes, Executive Education, and External strategic partnerships and collaborations, and the global Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) network with 13 sites globally.
The CAO collaborates with the Dean and Vice Deans in determining strategic directions for the School and develops integrated, multi-year, strategic implementation plans and economic models to support the achievement of academic goals, including the expansion of both degree and non-degree program offerings. The incumbent oversees the planning and operational management of administrative resources, systems and processes in support of academic priorities of the School, with responsibilities covering the following broad areas of: planning and budget; financial management, information technology services; human resource services; space planning and capital projects; building operations and support services, project management, legal, risk and FIPP legislation application; security; pandemic planning.
The CAO represents the Faculty in external relationships and to central and other University divisions in matters associated with the portfolio. The CAO provides strategic advice and recommendations to the Dean and Vice Deans on a wide variety of matters of strategic importance to the School, especially those concerning financial management, legal and governance, capital projects, and administrative policy and procedure. The incumbent leads a team of Directors and plays a leadership role in advising and coaching administrative managers across the School on operational matters.
The CAO represents Rotman through serving on university boards, committees, task forces and working groups and plays a vital role in critical inter-divisional communications throughout the university.
Qualifications Required:
I. EDUCATION:
Master’s degree in a related field (e.g., MBA) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
II. EXPERIENCE:
• Minimum of 15 years’ experience in senior positions with executive-level experience in a complex, decentralized, public sector organization, preferably in higher education.
• Extensive experience with complex collaboration networks.
• Solid understanding of university environments and an understanding of business school markets, both domestic and international.
• Advanced knowledge of and expertise in the development and implementation of large-scale strategic plans; budget modeling and financial management; space planning and capital project implementation; facility management and support services; information technology operations.
• Experience in large-scale change management initiatives
• Experience in leading, developing and managing staff and project teams.
• Experienced decision maker, with an understanding of multi-level decision rights and responsibilities in organizations
• Experience in designing complex models and reports used in the presentation of information to support strategic decision-making
• Experience in finding innovative solutions within constrained resource environments.
• Demonstrated ability to meet measurable short and long-term goals and objectives.
• Experience in chairing committees and setting agendas
• Experience in project management
• Demonstrates experience leading large scale projects involving multiple constituencies and stakeholders, in particular capital projects, is essential.
• Experience in working within unionized environments strongly preferred.

• Exceptional communications (oral, written), presentation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate ideas and plans, and to influence agendas and negotiate outcomes.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment, with a significant workload involving competing and shifting priorities and deadlines.
• Demonstrated tact, and diplomacy. Politically astute with the ability to understand diverse viewpoints and achieve successful results which meet the needs of various stakeholders.
• Approachable and collaborative management style and comfort working within a consultative and consensus-oriented environment
• Computer literacy: Excellent skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Databases, e-mail etc.
