University of St. Thomas
Assistant Professor of History
School of Arts and Sciences
The University of St. Thomas (www.stthom.edu), a private Catholic university, located in Houston, Texas, the nation’s fourth largest city, committed to the liberal arts and to the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, is seeking a full-time Assistant Professor of History. The position reports to the Chair of History within the Division of Liberal Studies in the School of Arts and Sciences.
The Department of the Core and the Department of History invite applications for an Assistant Professor of History, specializing in American History with research expertise in social and cultural history approaches and the ability to teach history topics in science, technology, and society.
The successful candidate will receive a dual appointment in the Department of the Core and the Department of History and will be expected to teach the Core Curriculum course Historical Consciousness, as well as courses in the undergraduate history major. Depending on expertise, the position may also include teaching in the Integrated Humanities and Master of Liberal Arts programs.
The duties and responsibilities of the history professor at UST require the highest standards of commitment to student outcomes, collegiality, and commitment to the mission of the university.
Minimum qualifications include: a completed doctoral degree; experience teaching undergraduate and graduate students (preferred); competency in an online teaching environment.
Interested candidates must provide a comprehensive CV and cover letter, evidence of a commitment to teaching excellence, and three professional references. Candidates should also submit a statement demonstrating a firm commitment to advance the mission of Catholic higher education generally, as articulated in Ex Corde Ecclesiae, and in the university’s understanding of its own particular Catholic mission (as outlined below).
Hiring for Catholic Mission:
The University of Saint Thomas is committed to hiring faculty who can help it not only fulfill its integrated mission-the formation of the whole person for flourishing in this life and the next-but also advance it in new ways. The University’s Catholic identity is at the center of this mission, a Catholicism expressed for our own age by the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1992), and Pope Saint John Paul II’s Ex Corde Ecclesiae. The University asks all candidates applying for a faculty position to consider these documents to ensure that their professional goals and practices can align with them.
Applicants need not be Catholic, but they need to be able to support joyfully and professionally the University as it seeks to be faithful to and embody the robust Catholicism–in its intellectual, doctrinal, moral, and spiritual dimensions–expressed by the Catechism and Ex Corde Ecclesiae and through the riches of the Catholic intellectual tradition. This vision of Catholic education, which is animated by the great Catholic intellectual and spiritual traditions, receives further depth and orientation from more contemporary authors such as Newman, Augustine, Aquinas, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and their classical forebears.
