The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of South Carolina (USC) invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Institute for Mind and Brain. The Institute for Mind and Brain (IMB: https://go.sc.edu/imb) is an interdisciplinary institute, based in the Department of Psychology, focused on understanding processes in the human brain, health, and disease. The IMB consists of approximately 35 full-time faculty members who support campus-wide programs including Psychology, Communication Science and Disorders, Public Health, and Computer Science and Engineering.
With a start date of July 1, 2024, the successful applicant will hold a faculty appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure and is expected to lead the IMB and facilitate cooperation across disciplines in addition to research and teaching. We seek a nationally recognized scholar and a proven leader who is excited to bring their vision to the IMB for its next phase of growth. The successful applicant must hold either an M.D. or a Ph.D. in a discipline closely related to cognitive neuroscience and/or brain health, plus years of experience consistent with USC academic policy for faculty rank.
The Director will:● Provide leadership and advocacy for faculty, staff, students, and alumni to promote the mission of the IMB in teaching, research, and public service/outreach.● Represent the IMB to the University administration, foster collaboration with other schools and colleges at USC, and provide leadership in guiding, engaging and building partnerships across and beyond the USC campus.● Communicate the mission and importance of the IMB’s programs to external audiences in order to sustain and increase private and public financial and non-financial support.● Lead a thriving program of research.● Teach graduate and undergraduate courses.
The IMB is housed in a recently renovated historic 13,675 square foot building near the main campus. This building, adjacent to the center of the USC campus, is well-equipped for fostering scientific collaboration and acquiring behavioral and physiological measures with infants, children, and adults. The center includes large and small meeting spaces, and easy parking for participants and visitors. The IMB is strategically located near the McCausland Center for Brain Imaging with its 3T Siemens Prisma MRI scanner, the new rural health outpatient facility that will house a 3T wide bore and 7T 60cm MRI systems and the upcoming new health sciences campus.
As the largest college at USC, the College of Arts and Sciences is the intellectual, artistic, scientific, and instructional heart of the university. The college is home to award-winning scientists, scholars and teachers that span the arts, humanities, natural science, and social science disciplines. The college’s 26 schools, departments, academic programs, and institutes offer 109 degrees to over 8,700 undergraduates and more than 850 graduate students. The college also supports several active research centers including the Carolina Autism and Neurodevelopment Research Center, McCausland Center for Brain Imaging, and Research Center for Child Well-Being. Faculty within the college are consistently recognized both nationally and internationally for teaching and research excellence.
USC’s main campus is located in Columbia, the state capital, close to the mountains and the coast. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has designated USC as one of only 73 public and 35 private academic institutions with “very high research activity” and also lists USC as having a strong focus on community engagement. The University has over 35,000 students on the main campus (and over 50,000 students system-wide), more than 450-degree programs, and a nationally ranked library system that includes one of the nation’s largest public film archives. Columbia is the center of a greater metropolitan area which has a population of over 800,000. Local natural and cultural attractions include the Congaree National Park, Riverbanks Zoo & Garden, Three Rivers Greenway, Lake Murray, Columbia Museum of Art, South Carolina State Museum, Koger Center for the Arts, Nickelodeon Theater, two ballet companies and active art, music, and theater scenes.
As a leader in understanding brain development and its role in higher cognitive processes such as attention, perception, language and communication, memory, executive functions, thinking, action and motor control, the IMB is committed to diversity and inclusion among our faculty, student body, and staff.
