Job Description Summary
The Research Specialist will be responsible for performing functions to maintain a biobank of human samples for several large multi-site cohort studies as well as assist in conducting research experiments for lung transplant projects within the Pulmonary Division. This position must maintain strict adherence to SOPs and quality control and assurance policies consistent with study guidelines and best biobanking practices, including communication with site coordinators. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to planning and conducting experiments on human samples as needed, equipment maintenance/calibration, communicating with research team members, purchasing, record keeping, and freezer monitoring.
Position contingent upon funding.
Job Description
The Research Specialist will be responsible for performing functions to maintain a biobank of human samples for several large multi-site cohort studies as well as assist in conducting research experiments for lung transplant projects within the Pulmonary Division. This position must maintain strict adherence to SOPs and quality control and assurance policies consistent with study guidelines and best biobanking practices, including communication with site coordinators. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to planning and conducting experiments on human samples as needed, equipment maintenance/calibration, communicating with research team members, purchasing, record keeping, and freezer monitoring.
Job Responsibilities
- Support operations of biobank including managing receipt of human samples from external sites and ensuring samples are logged into the LIMS appropriately. Tasks include but are not limited to managing communication with sites, scanning specimen barcodes into LIMS, confirming samples received match shipping manifest, and performing quality checks on samples received. Develop and adhere to SOPs for biobank operations. Train study members on proper collection, storage and shipping of samples.
- Manage all aspects of sample handling. Safely handle material in manner that maintains required temperatures. Utilize the LIMS system for all sample handling tasks to ensure chain of custody and audit trails for all activities. Maintain all required documentation. Propose and participate in ways to improve biobanking process.
- Facilitate sample distribution. Retrieving samples from inventory as requested by investigators. Package and ship samples in accordance with regulations. Provide investigators with reports of sample inventory when requested. Work closely with clinical research team members to ensure linkage between samples and clinical data.
- Perform specimen processing (e.g. serum, plasma, PBMC, BAL) in support of IRB approved protocols.
- Plan and conduct experiments with minimal supervision. Perform literature reviews as necessary. Work collaboratively with internal team members as well as external labs to be able to accomplish experiments. Ensure accurate and detailed documentation of experiments and results. Communicate results to team members and/or study investigators.
- Perform routine laboratory maintenance activities including freezer and equipment maintenance/calibration. Act as backup emergency contact for freezers monitoring. Purchase lab supplies as necessary.
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
