The Zell/Lurie Real Estate Center is the research arm of the Wharton Real Estate Department and supports student and faculty research throughout Wharton and Penn. The Real Estate Department has ten standing faculty , with Pre-Doc Researcher supporting faculty research on a full-time basis. Each Pre-Doc Researcher is assigned to work for two faculty, and may expect to work on 3-6 research projects per year. We anticipate individuals staying for two years before applying to graduate school.
Job Description
Successful candidates will have strong interests in economics or finance with additional training in statistics and computer science that allow them to support projects at the forefront of research in urban and housing economics and finance, urban development, and household finance.
In addition to a strong interest in economics, Pre-Doc Researcher needs to be well versed in statistics and/or econometrics as well programming in order to implement high-level data analysis. Familiarity with programs such as Stata, R and Matlab is valuable, although we will provide training on software used by faculty with which you may not be familiar. For example, because much urban and real estate-related research involves some type of spatial analysis, mapping programs are often used in our research. While we certainly value having such experience, many undergraduates do not. Hence, a willingness and ability to learn new coding languages is important. Very large data sets are frequently used, too, so the ability to manipulate and maintain them also is valuable. Because artificial intelligence is being used in a number of projects across our faculty, we now are looking for candidates with the ability to interact with AI platforms (Bard, ChatGPT, etc.). We expect such usage to increase rapidly.
Finally, Pre-Doc Researcher will be involved in all aspects of a research project over time, so report writing and analysis also is part of the job. This is considered the least technical aspect of the job, but it is important, as the ability to clearly and cogently summarize sometimes complex analytics can be essential in disseminating research. Hence, we are also looking for candidates with strong writing skills, in addition to excellent technical training. We anticipate that the successful candidate would work in this position for 1 or 2 years, before going on to graduate programs or careers in Economics, Public Policy, or another quantitative social science.
