Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Director of Special Collections Processing, and working closely with the Goldstein Director of Information Processing and with the Director of the Center for Global Collections, the Hidden Collections Processing Coordinator will direct a three-year preliminary phase of a library-wide initiative to increase access to the Penn Libraries’ hidden collections. Cataloging and processing our diverse and significant hidden collections has long been recognized as a central mission of the Penn Libraries technical services units.
The Hidden Collections Processing Coordinator will build on existing hidden collections initiatives and begin to craft a holistic strategy to identify cataloging and processing priorities, assess the resources available across our technical services units and identify opportunities for collaborative and innovative cataloging projects. As such, the Coordinator will chair a Hidden Collections Working Group and work closely with colleagues in the Center for Global Studies and with technical services units where general, special and electronic collections in a variety of formats, languages and subjects are acquired, processed and cataloged. Informed by feedback and recommendations from these stakeholders, the Coordinator will create a roadmap establishing a timeline with achievable goals and benchmarks, will make recommendations for the resources (e.g., staffing, supplies, funding, space) required to meet them and will monitor progress in increasing access to our collections. The Coordinator will also scope out projects requiring specialized language and subject expertise and seek funding opportunities from internal and external sources. Based on stakeholder feedback, the Coordinator may make recommendations for batch-processing and outsourcing, recommend optimal levels of processing and access (e.g. item/collection, minimal/full), make recommendations for the creation of metadata for digital assets, or may themselves process collections. Throughout, the Coordinator will ensure that prioritization of cataloging and processing projects is informed by the Penn Libraries Collections Strategy, the Collection Development Council, the research value of individual collections, the University’s academic curriculum, and by donor relations.
This is a three-year, full-time position with the possibility of renewal.
