Job Description Summary
Reporting directly to the Senior Associate Vice President, Strategy, Planning and Advancement Services, and working closely with other members of the Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) senior leadership team and program directors, this position supports the formulation of department and campaign strategy through data collection and analysis, creates and manages tools that demonstrate, analyze, and provoke data informed decisions, manages the DAR annual goal setting process nd implements specific strategic initiatives and projects in support of DAR planning needs.
The role is responsible for actively developing, supporting, and tracking DAR performance and activity metrics and results, manages the data and information that underpin the department’s ability to forecast and evaluate performance, goals and strategies, and share insights with key stakeholders to create awareness and understanding that undergird effective planning. This work includes benchmarking and comparative data analysis from peer groups and other relevant sources.
This position is a champion for a data-driven, decision-making culture. A key responsibility of the position will be to actively partner with senior leadership staff and their teams to assure a consistent approach to data quality across DAR and to lead staff groups that enable this work This position actively collaborates and partners with frontline and support areas across DAR to drive better analysis and insights. This role works closely and routinely with other specific roles and areas within central DAR including the Director of Business Process Integration & Technology Training, the Senior Director of Advancement Prospect Analytics (APA), the Senior Director of Gift Management, and the Chief Executive Director, Campaign and Engagement.
This role shares management and oversight with the Director of APA of a Senior Data Analyst position dedicated to support this work developing reports and reporting tools, providing analysis and quality assurance with all data sets.
This role helps define and support the DAR department level planning process for annual, multi-year, and campaign timeframes and participates in senior planning meetings, work teams, and projects. They lead work to create planning tools, frame goals and initiatives and design how data supports these processes.
Job Description
Job Responsibilities:
Reporting
Complete training to attain the highest level available of reporting, dashboard, and data source permissions on Compass.
Direct the creation and implementation of department level reports and dashboards that monitor department metrics, activity and results. Ensure reports provide development and alumni relations insights for past trends, current development metrics, and forecasting future performance.
Partner with Director of Gift Management on the development of monthly, annual and campaign progress reporting.
Co-manage a senior data analyst imbedded in APA who is responsible for the production, staff access and quality of these reports and data tools.
Analysis & Insights
Analyze and extract observations and insights from reports and data sets. Provide analysis and perspective that informs department plans, strategies, outcome measures, and decision-making.
Create meaningful data visualizations to enhance data understanding for viewers. Direct the distribution and sharing of data analysis and insights to the development and alumni relations team.
Support the VP and SAVP’s with data visualization that supplies content to their presentations.
Conducts routine benchmark and comparative data analysis to support insights for DAR level and program level evaluation and best practices.
Planning Process Management
Manages the process for the collection and tracking of fundraising annual and campaign goals across DAR.
Prepares summaries and analysis to support goal development and communication of DAR goals with senior University Leadership.
Coordinates annual planning meetings to review goals and results.
Working under the direction of the SAVP, SPAS, and the DAR senior leadership team, supports the campaign goal setting process.
Project Management Assistance
Special projects within the scope of business insights and strategic planning work.
Work with outside contractors as needed on projects (for example Advancement Leadership Forum ALF).
Partnership and Collaboration
Build collaborative and information-sharing relationships to ensure data consistency and understanding, gain insights and perspective from DAR colleagues in broad array of roles.
Regularly update with peers within DAR.
Regularly connect with a network of external experts in reporting, development and engagement analysis, prospect management, and Salesforce.

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree and 7-10 years of experience in managing data in support of business analysis, market research, strategic planning, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience required. The ability to think critically and strategically, with a strong understanding of business objectives, market trends, and consumer behavior. Excellent analytical skills to gather and analyze complex data, interpret findings, and make strategic recommendations. Strong leadership skills to build relationships with stakeholders, and drive change within an organization. Excellent communication skills to present complex data and analysis in a clear and concise manner to stakeholders at all levels of the organization. Proficiency in data analysis tools and software, such as Excel, Tableau, or SPSS. A solid understanding of development and alumni relations work. Overall, a Director of Business Insights and Strategic Planning should have a deep understanding of business strategy and an ability to apply it to real-world situations. They should be able to identify trends, analyze data, and provide actionable insights to drive business growth and success.
