An arts conservatory of international renown, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts was the first state-supported, residential school of its kind in the nation. Established by the N.C. General Assembly in 1963, the School opened as the North Carolina School of the Arts in 1965 after nearly a million dollars was raised to win the new school for Winston-Salem. In 1972, the School became part of the prestigious University of North Carolina system. The School’s mission is unique: to train students from middle school through graduate school for professional careers in the performing, visual, and film and television arts. Performance is an integral part of the training program, and students, faculty and guest artists present more than 400 public performances and screenings annually in the School’s facilities in Winston-Salem, as well as across the state and the Southeast, in major U.S. cities and overseas.

The Employee Relations Manager is a strategic partner with senior-level administrators across campus in developing and implementing creative and innovative HR solutions to the issues that challenge UNCSA. The manager provides consultation to administrators, as well as to faculty and staff members to resolve workplace problems before they escalate to formal grievances, external complaints, or legal action. The Manager mitigates the institutional risk of non-compliance with employment law. The incumbent consults and advises managers and hiring units on performance concerns and defensible disciplinary actions to help ensure compliance with federal, state, university, Office of State Human Resources (OSHR), University of North Carolina System Office, and campus employment laws, policies, and regulations. Staff grievances, formal pay disputes, appeal programs, performance management, and unemployment appeals will also be administered by the incumbent. Additionally, the incumbent will serve as the Reduction – In- Force (RIF) and Performance Management coordinator for the university and will serve as the primary contact and attend the University of North Carolina System Employee Relations Network, Performance Management Network, and Learning and Development Network.

Monday – Friday; Occasionally required to work over 40 hours a week

Employee Relations:
* Provides consultation and advice regarding policy interpretation to employees, managers, and high-level administrators regarding alleged violations of employee rights and work-related conflicts.
* Provides expertise in discipline and grievance matters by meeting and counseling employees and management on issues concerning the university’s grievance and disciplinary procedures and assisting employees in filing a grievance.
* Manage and conduct investigations.
* Seek to negotiate “win-win” solutions for employee and management.
* Recommend and facilitate creative solutions to resolve the involved situation; identify and move.
* Mediate and facilitate grievances filed thorough the SHRA Employee Grievance and Appeals Policy and Procedures.
*Counsel management and employees to ensure policy is being followed and time sensitive deadlines are being met.
* Manages the Reduction-In-Form (RIF) process for the university.

Performance Management:
* Administer and manage the EHRA non-faculty and SHRA performance management program.
* Review performance plans / position descriptions to provide useful and appropriate guidance to supervisors on applying institutional goals to specific job duties and crafting strategically aligned individual goals.
* Review disciplinary actions to determine which goal(s) will be affected in the appraisal.
* Provide guidance on written overall comments and determining appropriate overall ratings on the performance management plan.
* Provide coaching to employees and management on best practices as it relates to career development.
* Resolves complicated, sensitive or unusual problems.

Learning and Development:
* Develop and conduct presentations on various HR polices, special projects, new employee orientation, etc.
* Instrumental in working with various recognition programs.
*Serve as liaison between HR and various outside vendors.
* Obtain and /or develop effective training materials utilizing a variety of media.
* Train and coach managers, supervisors and others involved in employee development efforts.
*Develop and maintain organizational communications to ensure employees have knowledge of training and development events and resources.
* Conduct follow-up studies of all completed training to evaluate and measure results.

Unemployment Insurance:
* Serve as the university representative at unemployment hearings
* Provide professional, knowledgeable customer service to hearing parties, witnesses and legal representatives.
* Complete unemployment claims.

Consultation / Relationship Management
* Establishes and evaluates the relationships and interrelationships of all the issues across organizational boundaries (as needed) and shares knowledge and critical thinking process to achieve mutually agreeable outcomes.
* Presents information to a variety of audiences clearly and concisely with all levels of the campus to ensure understanding and credibility.
* Coaches and leads others in providing effective, responsive, timely consultation services.
* Conducts presentations on various HR topics, special projects, implementation of policies/programs/processes, new ER-related policies.

ComPsych Liaison:
* Serve as the ComPsych Liaison to increase the utilization rate of UNCSA community for ComPsych
* Identify programs offered by ComPsych that will be beneficial for the UNCSA community – specifically around mental health, supervision, and implicit bias.
* Write monthly announcements regarding ComPsych to been seen on various platforms (i.e weekly UNCSA announcements – My SA and university website)

Graduation from a four-year college or university and two years of progressively responsible experience analyzing, interpreting, applying, communicating and promoting HR best practices in the context of organizational goals and objectives; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
