Position Summary:
The School of Art at UNC Greensboro is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art History, with preference for Twentieth and Twenty-First Century American art histories, broadly conceived. Ideal candidates will have experience implementing asset-based and culturally responsive pedagogies when working with diverse students. The successful applicant for this position will contribute to pre-existing strengths in American art histories within the School of Art by teaching a 3/3 standard load, directly serving the Art History area’s curricula, while also assisting in the further development of that curriculum. They will also have Graduate Faculty Status and serve on MFA thesis committees in one of the most diverse and robust fine arts graduate programs in the Southeast, helping to foster the futures of contemporary U.S. and global art practices.
Additionally, the School’s art history faculty share a building with the Weatherspoon Art Museum. Home to one of the strongest collections of modern and contemporary American art in the Southeast, the Weatherspoon’s work is currently supported by the Terra Foundation for American Art and the Henry Luce Foundation. Museum staff are dedicated to working closely with students and faculty, including recent co-curatorial projects and the launch of an annual faculty fellowship. Additional arts and culture venues in the community include the School of Art’s downtown Greensboro Project Space, a gallery venue for experimental productions and installations; Elsewhere, a living museum and artist residency; and the International Civil Rights Center & Museum, a historic landmark and educational organization.
We seek to attract a diverse applicant pool for this position, one in keeping with the University’s own diverse student body. UNCG is a vibrant, minority-serving institution (MSI) with an undergraduate population of 49% ethnic minority students and 67% female identifying students. It is also Federally recognized as a Title III institution, with 51% of its undergraduates eligible for PELL grants. More than 30% of the University’s students are the first in their families to attend college. In addition, UNCG is ranked in the state’s top 3 system schools for Hispanic/Latino enrollment. UNC Greensboro is an inclusive learning community with a campus-wide culture that embodies access, equity, diversity, excellence, and collaboration. With an enrollment of more than 18,000 students, including 3,500 graduate students, and 2,800 faculty and staff, representing 90+ nationalities, UNCG is one of the most diverse universities in the UNC system. And, as an EEO/AA/M/F/D/V employer, we have a strong commitment to increasing faculty diversity on our campus and in our School.
