Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
The mission of the Academic Advising (Thrive@Carolina) Program is to create a supportive environment in which we partner with undergraduates as they explore personal goals, develop educational plans, and thrive at Carolina. Academic Advisors work with undergraduate students from orientation through graduation. Throughout their undergraduate years, students are served by the Academic Advising Program. Advisors assist students with their understanding of general education requirements and monitor students’ progress toward successful completion of degree requirements. We explain major and minor requirements and prerequisites, help students select appropriate courses, prepare academic worksheets and reconcile with Tar Heel Tracker, clarify University policies and procedures, and make referrals to appropriate campus support services. We assist students with making meaningful immediate as well as long-term educational goals, and we help students with developing strategies to make sound academic and personal decisions. Academic Advising is charged with clearing undergraduate students in the College of Arts & Sciences for graduation.
The Academic Advising (Thrive@Carolina) Program serves students in several campus locations. The Advising staff is currently comprised of ~50 full-time and ~10 part-time personnel. The Advising team serves the advising needs of all undergraduate students in the College of Arts & Sciences and students in professional schools who have a major or minor in the College.
Position Summary:
The Office of Undergraduate Education seeks a passionate, committed professional to join the Thrive@Carolina Campus Hubs, which seek to provide student-centered, holistic and seamlessly delivered support to students from acceptance through graduation. Hub staff are expected to bring positive energy and a collaborative mindset to their everyday work, partnering with campus staff, faculty and one another to ensure all students thrive. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others. The incumbent will have a strong commitment to the Liberal Arts, demonstrated experience utilizing an intersectional framework to support students holistically, and capable of leading a team of engaged employees to affect positive change through innovative systems. Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Senior Assistant Dean (SAD) translates the strategic vision for hubs into operational plans through their leadership across multiple assigned hub locations, consisting of over 40 full-time and student employees, ensuring that quality services are provided to students. Responsible for the overall strategy and assessment of their assigned hubs, the SAD coordinates hub unit benchmarks, develops innovative strategies to achieve objectives, and analyzes data to evaluate hub effectiveness. SADs are tasked with developing high-functioning, cohesive teams and oversee all human resource processes for assigned hub locations. SADs also collaborate with key stakeholders to bolster student success through a proactive, comprehensive and integrated initiatives.
This is a 12-month, full-time, permanent, EHRA Non-Faculty position which will require some evening hours and may have non-standard work hours.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
– Seven (7) years of professional experience within higher education.
– Appreciation for a liberal arts education and knowledge of UNC-Chapel Hill’s curriculums, policies and procedures.
– Deep familiarity with the intersectional framework and best practices required to achieve student success including academic, wellness, engagement and financial components. Ability to create and assess student learning outcomes and translate them into educational programs.
– Experience or training in social justice, diversity and/or cultural competence with a strong interest in continued professional development in these areas.
– Strong assessment skills and experience utilizing data to develop and adjust practice and programming.
– A high level of comfort in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and flexibility to adapt an evolving agenda.
– Impeccable integrity, discretion, judgement and keen diplomatic skills in handling confidential, sensitive information.
– Experience and desire to actively cultivate and maintain relationships at all levels and across organizations.
– Four years of successful supervisory and management experience, including experience navigating personnel concerns and addressing performance challenges in a fair and consistent manner.
– Ability to work through complex, confidential issues and provide solutions.
– Strong oral and written communication skills; experience teaching, training or facilitating. Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations to groups including reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
– Ability to utilize and/or learn software applications, learning platforms, or technology-based delivery systems.
– Minimum SACS qualifications to be appointed as fixed-term faculty
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
– Strong interest in promoting innovative systems and building a culture of integrated, holistic support for students.
– Willingness to go above and beyond in order to achieve the required goals.
– Experience with budget management, and an understanding of how to use limited financial resources.
– Familiarity with Universal Design principles.
– Knowledge of workforce education trends, career options and career and educational planning assessments.
– Experience, or interest in, contributing to educational research and professional literatures.
– Involvement in NACADA, NACE, NASPA, ACPA, NODA or other professional organizations supporting student success.
– Familiarity with social media and other digital technology and their application in higher education settings.
– Thorough knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practices and of workshop and program design.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
