Position Summary:
The Research Project Manager will work closely with Principal Investigators (PI) in the Departments of Pharmacology and Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill to provide project management for federally or privately funded large team science grants.
The Project Manager will serve a critical role and act as the primary point of contact in the communication and coordination among the research team and assure the timely implementation and completion of all research activities related to the project.
Responsibilities of the Project Manager will include but are not limited to; coordinate proposal preparation with the research team members and the Office of Sponsored Programs (pre-award), establish and monitor progress of project milestones, deliverables, and timeline; assist with project budgeting; coordinate team meetings; communicate with the funding agency; conduct day-to-day project related operations; perform necessary grant and research administrative tasks; and assist in writing and submission of the annual grant progress report and renewal application.
The Project Manager will ensure that project activities supporting National Implementation Research Network goals and deliverables are successfully carried out in collaboration with the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigators.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
3-5 years’ postgraduate experience, including at least one year of experience working in academic or biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry as a project lead.
Project management certification (PMP or equivalent) or project management experience as lab manager or equivalent industry-type position. A thorough knowledge of MS Office software, including MS Word and MS Excel, is required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
The candidate must be able to work, to move between tasks continuously and carry out multiple duties and responsibilities at the same time.
Demonstrated ability to work both independently with little supervision as well as collaboratively in this very dynamic resource environment.
This individual must be flexible, resourceful, and collaborative, yet able to work effectively with a high degree of independence.
Strong organizational skills and attentiveness to detail are essential for this role.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
A MS or PhD in pharmacology, biochemistry, biophysics, or related biomedical sciences is preferred.
The successful Research Project Manager will be an experienced, creative, and dynamic leader with superior interpersonal and problem-solving skills. The Research Project Manager will have well-developed attributes of professionalism, leadership, communication (verbal and written), presentation abilities, and superior organizational and time management skills.
Ability to analyze and integrate information from diverse disciplines, as well as a demonstrated ability to master new concepts. Familiarity with research funding in an academic environment is also strongly preferred.
Scientific productivity and experience with multi-investigator collaborations is desirable. A strong scientific background with experience in research design, data collection/management, grant and scientific manuscript writing, and knowledge of NIH funding mechanisms and the UNC system regulations also preferred.
Professional knowledge and skill in research principles, methods, and processes as well as knowledge of applied research methods and statistical procedures and related information technology related to genomics.
Relevant fields of research include, but are not limited to, statistics, research methodology, computer science, medical fields and or other coursework directly related to the work to be performed.
