Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
The Department of Statistics and Operations Research specializes in inference, decision-making, and data analysis involving complex models and systems exhibiting both deterministic and random behavior. We focus on developing and analyzing the necessary quantitative and computational tools to enable practitioners to solve problems in statistical and probabilistic analysis, modeling, optimization, and the evaluation of system performance. Our research work is at that core of Data Science, Machine Learning/AI, Analytics, Network Science and related fields. The Department of Epidemiology in the Gillings School of Global Public Health is internationally recognized as a leader in epidemiologic research and training of scientists grounded in theory and substantive knowledge, proficient in research methodology and implementation, and equipped to contribute new knowledge on the complex questions of cardiovascular health in populations. The postdoc will have many opportunities to interact with researchers in statistics, data science and epidemiology. Position Summary:
The Department of Statistics and Operations Research at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate to start immediately. Initial appointment will be for one year with reappointment to a second year on satisfactory performance. This position will work with Dr. Richard Smith of the Department of Statistics and Operations Research and Dr. Eric Whitsel of the Department of Epidemiology on the NIH-funded project The Epidemiology and Somatic Genomic Pathogenesis of Radon-Related Stroke. Radon is an inert gas that is widely distributed in the United States, but its radioactivity makes it a human health hazard. It is widely implicated as a causal factor in lung cancer but recent research has shown that the effects on cardiovascular outcomes including stroke may be just as great if not greater than its implications for lung cancer. The overall aim of the NIH project is to investigate these relationships through a series of surveys and epidemiological analyses. The specific aim of this postdoc position is to develop estimates (with relevant measures of uncertainty) for radon exposure at residential addresses. The postdoc will work with data from several historical surveys of radon exposure as well as a new survey that will be collected as part of the NIH project, with the intention of integrating this information into an exposure assessment program. Relevant skills include spatial statistics, Bayesian statistics and sample survey methodology. PhD in statistics, biostatistics or a closely related field and have experience with computational data analysis in R, Python or other programming languages.

PhD in statistics, biostatistics or a closely related field and have experience with computational data analysis in R, Python or other programming languages. Experience with programs for Bayesian spatial analysis (e.g. stan or nimble) are desirable.
