The University of Nebraska-Lincoln seeks applications and nominations of highly qualified individuals for the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (Student Life & Leadership). The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Life & Leadership is a senior administrative position within the Office of Student Affairs and reports to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
The Assistant Vice Chancellor will oversee the development and implementation of programs, services activities, and opportunities that complete the student experience and enhance their adjustment to and participation in college life with the specific purpose of increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation rates. The Assistant Vice Chancellor exercises considerable independent judgement and decision-making authority with primary responsibility for strategic administrative direction and leadership of several functional units comprising Student Life and Leadership, including Fraternity & Sorority Life; Student Leadership, Involvement & Community Engagement (SLICE); the LGBTQA+ Center; the Women’s Center; the Nebraska College Preparatory Academy; and TRIO. The Assistant Vice Chancellor also will support the adviser to the Association of Students at the University of Nebraska (ASUN), meeting regularly with them to support student government organizations and officers. Additional departments may be added to this portfolio depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.
The Assistant Vice Chancellor will develop and supervise budget processes for reporting units, supervise and evaluate the work of direct reports, promote division learning outcomes and program assessment, and play a key role in implementing the division’s strategic plan. The Assistant Vice Chancellor will work effectively with a wide variety of constituent groups including students, university staff, faculty and the community, and lead and serve on various division and university committees. In support of student programs and services, the AVCSA will assist the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs with the attainment of grants and external funding.
A master’s degree in educational leadership, higher education, student affairs administration or a closely related field is required. The successful candidate must have a minimum of five years successful and progressively responsible administrative experience in higher education with demonstrated ability to successfully lead and oversee the operations of a major unit or office. Experience supervising, training, and evaluating programs and staff is required. Also required are a demonstrated commitment to student-centered decision-making and service; proven ability to provide guidance and budget development and budgetary oversight to multiple departments; and experience with program assessment and review. Successful experience building collaborative partnerships, and a commitment to diversity and a record of inclusion is essential. Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment, build and manage teams effectively, and excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Demonstrated commitment to the intellectual, professional, and personal development of a diverse student body is required.
Preference will be given to candidates with a doctorate in an appropriate field. Experience in auxiliary enterprises and student development programming; an understanding of philanthropic strategies with ability to engage alumni in development activities; a working knowledge of legal and compliance issues related to student affairs; and knowledge of trends and best practices in student affairs are also preferred.
