About the Job
Summary of Position:
University of Minnesota Twin Cities’
Department of Biology Teaching and Learning is searching for a postdoctoral research associate in biology education research. The
successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Sarah L. Eddy (they/them). The Eddy lab focuses on increasing equity in
educational outcomes and currently has multiple ongoing projects related to how students’ identities influence their experiences within
biology classrooms. The successful candidate will be encouraged to utilize their theoretical and methodological expertise in shaping the
direction of these ongoing projects in consultation with Dr. Eddy. Some possible projects include exploring:
(a) climate experienced
by racially/ethnically minoritized students in active learning courses,
(b) narratives about sex and gender observed by trans-spectrum
students in biology courses and the impacts of these narratives, and
(c) experiences of autistic students in STEM courses.
(d) how
interest and career goals influence persistence of biology majors
Classroom interventions and evaluation based on what we learn from
these studies is also planned. In addition, the successful applicant will be encouraged to develop projects based on their own interests as
part of this position. Most projects currently employ qualitative methods. The appointment is for one year with possible renewal for one
additional year contingent upon satisfactory performance. Both remote and part time work can be negotiated. The ideal start date is January
2024 (there is some flexibility here).
Depending on the project chosen, specific responsibilities could include, but are not limited
to,
Essential and Other Functions:
Research (60%)
Read and evaluate educational
research papers, design and conduct educational research studies, manage participant recruitment, interview participants, analyze
qualitative data, write research papers, and present findings, apply for grants
Curriculum and Assessment Development (20%)
As
needed, design curriculum and evaluate their effect on student affect and learning. Teach and/or train others to teach the curricular
intervention. Evaluate fidelity of implementation of assessment. Administer and/or train others to administer the
assessment.
Supervision and Teaching (20%)
Co-advise and mentor graduate students and undergraduate research assistants as needed.
Assist with development of curricular materials and assessments and surveys for undergraduate biology
courses.
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications
PhD in (a) a STEM field (e.g. biology chemistry, etc)
with a demonstrated interest in education, (b) science education, (c) educational psychology, (d) gender studies with a demonstrated
interest in biology and/or science education or (d) related fields.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with qualitative methods
(conducting interviews, qualitative analysis, etc)
Experience managing participants & projects (possibly across multiple
institutions)
Experience with scholarly writing
Ability to work collaboratively with people from different disciplines and diverse
backgrounds.
