Summary
The Education Director upholds the mission of the University of Michigan Medical School to transform health through bold and innovative education, discovery, and service. Contributing to the University’s mission to strive for excellence in clinical care, research, and medical education, the Education Director adheres to and ensures departmental compliance with the organization’s Code of Ethics and relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
With oversight and direction from the Vice Chair of Education and the Program Directors, the Education Director is responsible for the financial management of the accredited medical education training programs (fellowship, residency, and/or clerkship). The Education Director must possess strong leadership and personnel management skills and is expected to develop unique knowledge of the ACGME and Program Requirements, policies, and procedures. Additionally, the Education Director has comprehensive and detailed understanding of policies of the American Board of Surgery and its specialties, GME, and the Rules and Regulations of the House Officer Association Contract.
The Education Director serves as an important liaison to Program Directors, coordinators, learners, faculty, other staff members and will continually assess and direct a wide range of programmatic issues including: long range schedule planning, recruitment processes, administrative workflow, databases, communication with faculty and trainees, and management of internal and external program relations.
The Education Director reports directly to the Chief Department Administrator.

The Department of Surgery operates in a hybrid work environment, consisting of both in-person and remote work. Onboarding and training for this position will primarily take place in-person. Thereafter, this position will be eligible for flexible work opportunities at the discretion of the hiring department, but will require an on-site presence each week. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on the business needs of the hiring department, throughout the course of employment.

Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
