Position Overview
The Visual Arts Studio Technologies Lab (VAST) is a hub for
arts innovation using digital fabrication processes and technology within the Department of Visual Art at the University of Kansas. This
facility is both housed and partnered with the Common Shop, a well-resourced wood shop, materials store, and workspace. Together, these
resources support interdisciplinary research throughout the Department of Visual Art providing monitored and independent equipment access,
training opportunities, and technical consultation to students, staff, and faculty.
The candidate for this position is required to work
with the department chair, materials lab coordinator, as well as independently to oversee and/or assist with the operations of multiple
resource labs. While this position is primarily responsible for the management, ongoing operation, vision, and future development of the
VAST Lab, they will work in close collaboration with staff who oversee the Common Shop and ICRC as well as staff and faculty throughout the
different areas of the Department of Visual Art. The individual must be knowledgeable about university procedures, capable of using good
judgment and discretion, and able to act as a professional resource for a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty in the
Department of Visual Art.

Job Description
50% – Coordinate with department chair and faculty for research,
continuing development, and management of the VAST Lab, a departmental technology lab and maker space. This includes:

•     Equipment
  procurement, maintenance, and upkeep of an ecosystem of analog and digital tools including CNC Routers, Laser cutters, 3D printers, 3D
  scanners, vinyl cutters, and a computer lab
•     Providing training, guidance, and monitoring of safety procedures, best
  practices, and appropriate tool usage for all facility users
•     Produce and distribute training manuals, tutorials, and
  equipment specific signage
•     Produce, organize, and/or facilitate individual and class demos and workshops on CNC, laser, and
  3D printing systems and software (both independently and in collaboration with department faculty)
•     Hold administrative access
  from Information Technology (IT) for department technology lab computers to install and update software as needed, coordinate with IT about
  various software needs in other student used departmental computer labs
•     Coordinate work maintenance schedule as applicable
  through KU Operations (Facilities Services, Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities Planning and Development, Custodial Services)
•     Attend professional development conferences and workshops

15% – Supervise student workers, this includes:

•   
   Interview, hire and oversee the training of all student hourly workers in the Common Shop and VAST Lab
•     Responsible for
  scheduling student workers and collecting and verifying time sheets
•     Guide and instruct student hourly help in all safety
  procedures, and proper equipment and tool usage

15% – Assist the Materials Lab Coordinator with student and faculty projects in
the Common Shop. This includes: 

•     Providing training, guidance, and monitoring of safety procedures, best practices, and
  appropriate tool usage for all facility users
•     Advise and assist students in preparation and construction of various projects
  that would typically include construction of picture frames, furniture construction, various sculpture pieces and gallery pedestals
•     Assist Material Lab Coordinator in planning and coordination of assigned work projects
•     Assist Materials Lab
  Coordinator with routine equipment and facility maintenance including minor to moderate repairs, cleaning, and organization. Maintain power
  and hand tools in proper working order
•     Advise lab coordinator of any equipment requiring service or needed repairs, and
  initiate placing service calls or tending to the repairs

20% – Management of inventory (supplies/materials) and funding. This
includes: 

•     Supervising the collection of funds from sales of services and materials
•     Issue invoices for all work
  completed by the shop staff members
•     Coordinate directly with the Comptroller’s Office for material sales protocol, sales/
  financial systems, inventory control, and approved rates 
•     Coordinate with the SSC the balances of funds and projections 
•     Coordinate with the department chair for planning the need for future funding
•     Maintain a complete inventory of
  supplies and materials
•     Track material usage and identify needed supplies to be purchased
•     Initiate the purchase
  of these restocking materials as necessary

Required Qualifications
1.    Bachelor’s degree in fine arts or a
related field and 3 years’ experience; or a high school diploma or GED and 5 years’ related experience
2.    3 years of fabrication
experience (i.e., construction, woodworking, art fabrication, etc)
3.    One year experience in a position requiring knowledge of wood
shop equipment and safety practices. 
4.    One year experience in a position requiring knowledge of digital design and fabrication
processes such as CNC Milling/Routing, Laser Cutting, 3D printing, and associated CAD/CAM software.

Preferred
Qualifications
1.    Master’s degree in Fine Arts or related field  
2.    3 years of experience in a position requiring
knowledge of wood shop equipment and safety practices.
3.    3 years of experience in a position requiring knowledge of digital design
and fabrication processes such as CNC Milling/Routing, Laser Cutting, 3D printing, and associated CAD/CAM software. 
4.    Knowledge of
shop equipment and best practices for working with wood, metal, plastics and other materials
5.    Excellent computer literacy and
experience with inventory processes. 
6.    Fluency and expertise with software such as Rhino, Cura, and Adobe Creative Suite
(Illustrator, Photoshop).
7.    Knowledge and ability to instruct others in proper use of power tools and shop safety
procedures. 
8.    Communication and problem solving & leadership skills. 
9.    Ability to work independently. 
10.    Ability to
work with a diverse group of people.
11.    Ability to assist students and faculty to create various well-crafted
products/projects/objects for artwork
12.    Ability to perform multiple tasks and prioritize duties. 
13.    Proven experience with
supervision and good organizational skills. 
14.    Ability to perform the physical aspects of the job with or without
accommodation.
