INTRODUCTION
UConn’s Facilities Operations Department is anticipating two job openings for Maintenance Supervisor 1 – Electrical positions. These positions are only open to current qualified UConn NP-2 employees. The Maintenance Supervisor 1 – Electrical positions are permanent, full-time, 37.5 hours/week positions. The work schedule is 1st Shift Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an unpaid half an hour for lunch.
These positions are categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Must be willing to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that effect campus operations. Applicant must also be willing to respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends, and holidays) and must make the commitment to work scheduled shutdowns during regular work hours and on overtime. These positions require on-site supervision of any emergency situation that arises during the day or outside of normal work hours. Please note that Facilities Operations NP-2 employees may also be required to perform job duties as assigned at any of the Regional Campuses. The hourly rate of pay will be determined based on the employee’s current Step of the TC Pay Plan.
SELECTION PLAN
Applicants must possess and retain a current motor vehicle operator license throughout employment with the University. A current State of Connecticut E-1 or E-2 license is required and must be retained throughout employment with the University. Applicants must also have up-to-date Eversource ESOP 100 High Voltage Training.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
At UConn, the Maintenance Supervisor 1 – Electrical (MS1 – Electrical) positions for the Facilities Operations Electrical Shop are responsible for assisting the Maintenance Supervisor 2 – Electrical (MS2 – Electrical) positions with coordinating the daily work assignments for this group of employees. The Electrical Shop is staffed with QCW Electricians, Skilled Trades Apprentice Electricians, Work Based Learning Students, along with Power Distribution Electricians who perform high voltage work; at times, the MS1 – Electrical may be required to perform electrical job duties in the role of a working supervisor; assists with the purchase of tools and materials for all jobs and projects; works with the MS2 – Electrical to maintain work schedules and job assignments utilizing the AiM system; assists with offering overtime opportunities and ensuring that overtime is equalized amongst job classifications; reviews and approves time records in the Core-CT system; assists with overseeing the high voltage electrical system on campus and works with Power Plant staff to ensure power systems, both distribution and internal systems, are operating appropriately; brings in and oversees electrical contractors when needed to upgrade and install new systems, including high voltage systems; works with Eversource and others to maintain and update maps and manholes; oversees Power Logic metering system; monitors and ensures that emergency lighting and generator systems are properly maintained, and that proper documentation is kept and sent to the Fire Marshal’s office and to the DEEP; inspects jobs for quality, as an “expert” in electrical code requirements; assists employees with troubleshooting work and resolving issues; may also perform more technical tasks as required; may attend meetings with engineering groups to plan upgrades and expansions of systems to accommodate growth of the campus; works with EH&S and Public Safety to maintain safe and code compliant electrical systems and work programs; assists with the estimating of projects by the shop and coordinates assistance from other trade shops as needed; works with customers to determine work schedules; determines when work can be done most efficiently, utilizing contractors when needed; assists the supervisors and management team in long range goal planning; maintains employee records and handles disciplinary issues as required; participates on hiring teams; may attend project meetings and may provide input or recommendations as to what standards for materials should be, along with determining the best method to carry out projects; may assist with monitoring cost tracking of projects to meet estimated budget; provides good customer service and ensures information is being communicated accurately and in a timely manner; works with administrative staff to ensure that the scheduled training for employees is completed on time, which includes, but is not limited to, courses required by Environmental Health & Safety and UConn, along with Continuing Ed, Code, CPR, Eversource ESOP 100 High Voltage Training, Convex, and Electrical Policy.
Schedules, assigns, oversees, and reviews the work of staff; provides staff training and assistance; conducts performance evaluations; determines priorities and plans crew work; establishes and maintains crew procedures; develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards; acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; prepares reports and correspondence; performs some of the more skilled duties involved; may estimate time, skills and material needed for proposed repairs or improvements; performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY
Considerable knowledge of relevant state and national codes and regulations; modern methods and equipment involved in the trade indicated by the parenthetical title of the class; interpersonal skills; oral and written communications skills; skills in performing technical duties of the class; ability to read and interpret specifications, blueprints, and sketches; ability to utilize computer software; supervisory ability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of experience in the trade area indicated by the parenthetical title.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have included performing highly skilled duties in the trade area indicated by the parenthetical title.
NOTE: For state employees, this experience is interpreted at the level of a Qualified Craft Worker.
