Position Description
Dr. Christina Ravelo in the Ocean Sciences Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of North Pacific Paleoceanography Postdoctoral Scholar. The Ocean Sciences Department is an inclusive, supportive, and innovative community of people broadly involved in many aspects of oceanography and other marine sciences.
We seek to hire a postdoctoral scholar to work collaboratively on our NSF-funded project to reconstruct sea ice in the North Pacific and its marginal seas during the Quaternary. Candidates will be expected to contribute to either or both of the following components.
One component of this project is to build a dynamically updatable, online database of North Pacific paleoceanographic records. We envision a website that interfaces with existing databases such as NOAA’s World Data Service for Paleoclimatology or the Index to Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples, but does not replace them. The ideal candidate for this component will excel at collaboration and have experience in coding and database management as well as a background in paleoceanography; however, the website design and implementation may be contracted out.
The second component of this project is to fill in gaps in Bering Sea paleoceanography, in particular sea ice extent, during glacial-interglacial transitions in the Late Quaternary. The ideal candidate for this component will have experience working with marine sediment cores and paleoceanographic tools such as microfossil analysis (specifically diatoms), IP25, alkenones, grain size, and/or other geochemical proxies.
The selected candidate must demonstrate strong communication and collaborative skills as well as the ability to work independently. Applicants with the applicable background to succeed at both projects and a strong publication record are highly encouraged to apply.
We welcome candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion and who have experience in creating an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. We also welcome applications from those who have had non-traditional career paths, who have taken time off for personal reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.
