Position Description:
The Associate Director, Competitive Sports supervises and manages multi-functional recreation units with programmatic and facility operations oversight. Program areas include: 30+ intramural sports; 50+ competitive club sports teams; instruction in martial arts and sports; watersports instruction including sailing, surfing, rowing, windsurfing, kayaking and standup paddle; and adaptive and inclusive recreational activities. Facility operations include: Intramural Field; Athletic Training Room; and the Marina Aquatic Center boating and watersports facility. The incumbent manages a budget of $2M and a staff of 2 direct reports who in turn supervise 14 full time professional staff and approximately 200 student and part-time staff.
The Associate Director participates in high-level decision making and leadership over revenue generating and university funded recreational programs; the operation of recreation facilities; and other services and special initiatives. The position reports through UCLA Recreation, a department of Student Affairs in the Division of Campus Life, and operates at a high level in building relationships within Student Affairs and partnerships across key campus entities. As part of the Recreation Executive Team, the Associate Director develops and advances strategic goals, participates in managing department budget, and supports operational planning. The Associate Director works with Program Directors, Unit Managers, and Facility Managers to coordinate facility, program, service, and business operations to meet the needs of the campus community.
The scope of responsibility for this position plays a significant role in the quality of life on the UCLA campus. Working in close collaboration with the Director of UCLA Recreation, and various leadership positions across campus, the Associate Director has responsibility for supporting the integrity and quality of UCLA in the delivery of high quality facilities, experiences, and services to students, faculty, staff, participants, fans, guests, and the campus community.
All decision-making takes into consideration organizational, University and governmental guidelines, when applicable. Interpretation of guidelines and formulation of policies is required when guidelines are ambiguous or none are available. This position requires in-depth knowledge of all aspects of revenue-based events and programs, professional and student leadership development, and policy guidelines.
Special Instructions:
The budgeted hiring salary/target range for this position is the posted minimum to $8,750 monthly – with salary placement based on skills, knowledge, and experience.
This position also provides full health benefits and membership in the UC Retirement Plan. Pay at the top of the budgeted pay range is commensurate with prior experience.
