Position description
POSITION AVAILABLE: Assistant/Associate Professor of Clinical Diagnostic Pathology
SALARY: The salary range for this position is $154,800-$202,600. “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.
QUALIFICATIONS: We are seeking an outstanding Veterinary Clinical Pathologist (DVM/VMD degree or equivalent) for a fully-funded, clinically-oriented faculty position. Board eligibility in the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (Clinical Pathology) or European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology, or the ability to obtain such board certification within the first two years of employment, is required. Candidates are expected to develop a thematic, collaborative clinical research program in specialties aligned with clinical pathology. Expertise aligning with current areas of need and demand include informatics/data management/artificial intelligence or clinical pathology of non-domestic animals (avian/exotic/zoo/wildlife). However, all areas of clinical pathology will be considered, including but not limited to hematology, clinical chemistry, cytopathology, point-of-care testing technologies, biomarker development, or immunodiagnostics. The School of Veterinary Medicine embraces the One Health concept and offers many opportunities for collaboration on projects that span animal, human and ecosystem health. Experience, enthusiasm and effectiveness in professional student education is desired. Experience and competence in clinical pathology diagnostic service is required.
A valid license to practice veterinary medicine in California or a University license will be required before employment (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857; California Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1); for those not already licensed in California, acquisition of a California license will be facilitated by the School of Veterinary Medicine.
The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching: 1) Participation in instructional lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum; 2) clinical teaching in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH); 3) participation in the resident training program of the VMTH. A demonstrated commitment to the training of veterinary or biomedical students and innovative teaching methods is preferred.
Clinical: The position includes a 70% commitment to diagnostic service, with 30% a balance of teaching and creative work. The individual will be responsible for directing, instructing and supervising veterinary students, pathology and clinical residents and visiting scholars; providing diagnostic service; and advising and consulting with clinicians and residents. The successful candidate is encouraged to help develop and expand the diagnostic offerings of VMTH laboratory services.
Research: Development of a creative and collaborative research program in relevant fields of interest is expected, including publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals, authoring book chapters and reviews, developing client informational materials, and investigating and disseminating findings of novel diagnostic cases. The successful applicant is expected to obtain funding and direct research programs that could involve professional students, residents and/or graduate students.
Service: The University of California has a system of shared governance. Active participation in committees, professional organizations, continuing education and other appropriate outlets is required. The department has a faculty mentoring program in which participation is expected.
Faculty members in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis have opportunities to collaborate with clinicians and researchers in the School of Medicine, the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, the Veterinary Center for Clinical Trials, the Comparative Pathology Laboratory, the One Health Institute, the California National Primate Research Center, the Cancer Center, the Center for Equine Health and the Center for Companion Animal Health, among others.
